Class A Decking System - Roehampton Club London

OVERVIEW

Project overview

Founded in 1901, the Roehampton Club is one of southwest London’s most prestigious private members’ clubs, renowned for its sporting facilities and landscaped grounds. As part of a programme of building improvements, the Club redeveloped its first-floor terrace to create a larger, durable and fully compliant outdoor area overlooking the gardens and golf course.

The brief required a non-combustible, long-life decking system that could integrate with a newly constructed cantilevered steel frame while delivering a refined aesthetic suitable for a high-profile hospitality environment.

The challenge

The existing timber terrace was to be replaced with a larger steel-framed structure. Fire safety, drainage and level accuracy were key performance requirements, alongside strict compliance with Approved Document B and BS 8579:2020.

As the new terrace was constructed above an occupied floor, it required a lightweight yet high-strength system with precise height control and minimal structural impact. The varying levels of the new steel frame also meant that flexibility in build-up height would be essential.

The solution

Wallbarn supplied a complete Class A fire rated system, from substructure to surface finish. Components specified included:

  • MetalPad Ex adjustable pedestals, 100% steel with Zintec 200 anti-corrosion coating, Class A rated under EN 13501-1
  • Aluminium Box Rail joists, high-grade 6063 T6 extruded aluminium offering exceptional span performance
  • Ultra Low Rail / Joist Holders
  • Exadeck porcelain decking, 12 mm porcelain boards in Teca colour, non-combustible and low maintenance
  • Fire-rated W Clip hidden deck board fixing

Wallbarn’s technical team worked directly with the architect, structural engineer and project manager from early design stages, advising on build-up heights, steel span spacing and layout optimisation. A site inspection was undertaken during planning to review tolerances and ensure coordination between the frame and the substructure system.

When level variations were identified after the steelwork was installed, Wallbarn provided revised layout drawings and adjusted components to ensure consistent finished heights and compliant performance.

Installation and performance

The 275 m² terrace was constructed on the cantilevered steel frame using a combination of low-height MetalPad Ex pedestals and aluminium Box Rails in multiple profiles to correct level discrepancies.

The system was mechanically fixed to the frame, creating a robust and rigid structure. Despite their compact size, the 25 mm Box Rails achieved spans of up to 800 mm, confirmed by independent testing.

Bull-nosed Exadeck boards were installed to form perimeter details, with matching porcelain step tiles used on the staircase for visual continuity. The resin-bonded surface finish ensured a stable, elegant and non-combustible result.

Outcome

Through close collaboration with the design and site teams, Wallbarn delivered a compliant, high-performance and visually cohesive terrace system. The result is a durable and low-maintenance outdoor area that meets Class A fire safety standards while enhancing the Club’s architectural quality and member experience.
