Accoya Wood Annex Transforms a 1950s London Terrace

OVERVIEW

This 1950s end-of-terrace house in London has been beautifully extended with a single-story timber annex, blending modern and traditional design while increasing the living space for the homeowners. Built with sustainable materials, the annex features Accoya wood foundations, cross-laminated timber for the structure, and Accoya cladding, posts, windows, and roof copings, avoiding the need for concrete, brick, and steel. The use of Accoya wood not only ensured durability but also minimized waste, as off-cut pieces were shared between components. The project significantly reduced embodied CO2 by 70% compared to a conventional brick-and-steel extension, demonstrating how small domestic projects can have a large environmental impact.
