The Herschel Building is one of Newcastle University’s central teaching spaces, located in the heart of the city. It is home to a variety of lecture theatres and teaching rooms, supporting students across a wide range of disciplines.

As part of the university’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion, a fully compliant Changing Places facility has been installed within the Herschel Building. This ensures that staff, students, and visitors with complex disabilities have access to the appropriate hygiene and changing facilities, allowing equal participation in university life.

Changing Places Products Specified & Installed

Working closely with Newcastle University’s estates and access teams, Astor Bannerman delivered a high-quality, fully compliant Changing Places facility in line with BS8300 and Changing Places Consortium standards.

The facility has been strategically located within the first floor of the Herschel Building to ensure ease of access from main teaching spaces and entrances.

The installation includes:

• Astor CTX2-CP Height Adjustable Changing Table
• Ceiling Track Hoist, facilitating safe and smooth transfers across the room
• Astor ABW-CP Height Adjustable Wash Basin
• Full room coverage, emergency alarm system, grab rails, wide-access door, and appropriate signage

Each component was selected to support long-term reliability, ease of use, and low maintenance, aligning with Newcastle University’s inclusive design vision.
