OVERVIEW
In Vienna, an innovative skatepark project for the Vienna Skateboarding Club has turned heads not only for its design but also for its choice of materials. The brand new indoor skatepark in Vienna was built by our fellow Latvians – one of the leading skatepark construction companies in Europe – Mind Work Ramps. The project features Riga Wood’s birch plywood products, specifically Riga Ply and Riga Poliform, which have proven to be indispensable for building durable, high performance skate ramps.
Why Birch Plywood?
Birch plywood has long been a favourite among skate park builders due to its outstanding mechanical properties. It is durable, long-lasting, and strong – ideal characteristics for withstanding the wear and tear of skateboarding. Additionally, birch plywood can be bent to create precise and smooth curves, making it perfect for skate ramps that demand intricate shaping and deliver an optimal skateboarding experience.
In this project, Riga Ply (WG/WG) served as the backbone material. Its strength and rigidity allowed for the creation of a solid and reliable structure. The material’s ability to hold screws securely ensures that the ramps remain stable even after extended use.
In addition, Riga Poliform was selected for its unique surface properties. Coated with a highly durable wood-plastic composite (WPC) material, this product offers a hard and dense surface that resists mechanical damage and wear. Importantly, the WPC surface is not overly slippery, providing skateboarders with the grip they need to perform tricks safely and effectively.
