The challenge

Zweibrücken Fashion Outlet, a popular shopping destination near Saarbrücken, Germany, spans 120 stores and over 21,000 square metres of retail space. As part of its comprehensive modernisation programme, the management team sought sustainable upgrades, focusing on energy efficiency and water conservation.

To achieve BREEAM certification, a global sustainability benchmark, the Fashion Outlet required a high-performance solution for its busy washrooms to reduce water usage and resolve ongoing soap dispenser issues.

The solution

Zweibrücken Fashion Outlet partnered with Ideal Standard to supply Intellimix taps, which combine water and soap dispensing into one sleek unit. With a flow rate of just 1.9 litres per minute – 62% lower than standard mixer taps – Intellimix reduces water consumption while maintaining a comfortable user experience. This innovation not only eliminated the need for separate soap dispensers but also streamlined washroom cleanliness and efficiency.

For areas where soap isn’t essential, like baby changing rooms, Ideal Standard offers the Intelliflow tap. This option delivers the same water-saving benefits and a matching design to Intellimix but without automatic soap dispensing. It can be paired with the new Ceratherm T Premixer, a thermostatic angle valve that ensures consistently warm water at low flow rates of 1.9 l/min, promoting comfort and safety. Unlike conventional models, the Ceratherm T Premixer provides reliable performance, even with reduced water flow, delivering a safe, comfortable experience for every user.

The impact

Ideal Standard’s Intellimix taps have transformed sustainability and user satisfaction at Zweibrücken Fashion Outlet. By replacing 6 l/min sensor taps with 35 Intellimix units across three washrooms, the outlet saved 500,000 litres of water in just three months—putting it on track to save 2 million litres annually. This reduction supports BREEAM recertification and enhances Zweibrücken Fashion Outlet’s reputation as an eco-conscious shopping destination.

The design also keeps washstand areas cleaner, reducing soap drips and water splashes and easing cleaning demands. Customers appreciate the sensor-activated taps, while the maintenance team values the modular design, which simplifies component replacement.

Additionally, Zweibrücken Fashion Outlet’s logo appears on Intellimix’s digital screens, reinforcing brand identity and elevating the user experience.
