Borough Yards is a vibrant new development of retail streets and commercial office space located in and around a series of restored railway arches next to historic Borough Market in southeast London.The retained façades of forgotten warehouses blend sensitively into a new development providing elevations to two 6-storey office buildings. Schüco Jansen thermally broken steel windows and doors were chosen to replace the original thermally inefficient steel windows, and for the glazing in the new long elevation.Photo credits: Dean Hearne

The construction of Oakmoor School in Hampshire was central to the regeneration of a former garrison town Whitehill and Bordon. Responding to the flat site and mature woodland context, the school has been designed as a collegiate campus with four separate buildings arranged to create a central courtyard that acts as a social and teaching hub for the school’s community. 

Located in the heart of central London, adjacent to the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, 25 Cannon Street recently underwent a significant transformation to become a symbol of contemporary workspace excellence. Spanning 116,000 square feet, the building now offers high-quality office and retail space, three levels of communal terraces and a newly created public garden.Photo credits: Dirk Lindner

Part of a wider development in Spitalfields, East London, Lamb Street is a two-storey mixed-use commercial project completed in 2023, with an award-winning design inspired by local history.Installed by Nuëcø Façade & Glazing Solutions, the project features both aluminium and steel curtain walling systems from Schüco, as well as Schüco AD UP 75 doors with concealed hinges and full-height pull bars with up to RC2 security. The upper floor and ground floor shopfronts are constructed with Schüco FWS 50+ SG (structural glazing) aluminium curtain walling. The Old School House at the historic Francis Holland School in Sloane Square, London, has undergone an extensive renovation which includes the addition of glazed steel-framed screens and Schüco Jansen steel fire doors throughout the building.As part of a transformation that has brought the building into the modern era without sacrificing history or style, the new steel screening and fire doors increase the vital element of safety in the space.Photo credit: Forcia

Completed in 2022, the three-storey building makes use of diverse materials such as Corten steel cladding and living walls externally, and polished concrete internally, with large Schüco doors and windows on each floor. Regularly taking on high-end developments, Studio Spicer is no stranger to the benefits of using Schüco systems, so decided to specify Schüco windows and doors for its office building. The new build expansion of Thornhill Primary school in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire was conducted with sustainability at the forefront of its design.Expanding the school from a 1-form to a 3-form entry, Central Bedfordshire Council wanted to create a healthy learning environment housed in an energy-efficient building.Constructing a Passivhaus certified school presents a particular set of challenges beyond designing buildings to meet strict performance criteria. School structures must adhere to building regulations and their design must consider the various practical features required to create a functioning, accessible education facility.

Nestled in the heart of Leeds city centre, 11 & 12 Wellington Place sets a new benchmark for sustainable development. Lorna and Gavin Gall’s new home on the banks of the River Clyde has large sliding or bi-fold Schüco doors on every floor providing river views and filling the house with natural light.In addition to the sliding and bi-fold doors, the front of the house has Schüco tilt/turn windows, and fixed windows around the front door.

The Parcels Building is an ambitious retrofit scheme located in a prime location next to Selfridges on Oxford Street, London. Its innovative façade design and skilled execution secured the top prize, Overall Winner, at the Schüco Excellence Awards 2024.The new façade is constructed with Schüco FWS 50 curtain walling which sits behind handset Portland stone and pre-cast concrete elements. This gives the overall effect of windows from the outside of the building while providing the airtightness and thermal efficiency that comes with continuous curtain walling. The new building envelope lets in much more natural light than the original façade while also greatly improving its energy efficiency. The U-value of the old façade was estimated to be 5 W/m²K while the new façade achieves 0.3 W/m²K for the walls and 1.4 W/m²K for the vision glazing, delivering substantial energy savings and improving occupant comfort.Photo credit: Nick Kane
