Vertical active fire and smoke curtain barrier providing 120 minutes integrity and 120 minutes radiation control, achieving 10.7 kW/m² at 120 minutes, tested to BS 8524-1 and installed to BS 8524-2.
Vertical active fire and smoke curtain barrier suitable for a wide range of internal fire compartmentation and smoke control applications, including protected means of escape, atria, lobbies, receptions, corridor separation, openings in fire-resisting walls, boundary protection, escalators, stairwells, lift shafts and lift lobbies.
Commonly specified within hospitals, healthcare facilities, schools, universities, hotels, high-rise buildings, mixed-use developments, commercial offices, retail environments, stadia, museums and galleries, as well as transport infrastructure, industrial and utility installations. Also suitable for use within defence, custodial, policing and secure environments where reliable fire and smoke containment is critical.
The system supports flexible architectural layouts while maintaining building fire strategy objectives, tenability requirements and regulatory compliance.
The Flameshield EW120 S Vertical Active Fire and Smoke Curtain Barrier is an electrically operated, gravity fail-safe fire and smoke control system designed to form a virtually continuous fire-separating barrier within a building. The system delivers 120 minutes fire integrity and 120 minutes radiation performance, maintaining radiation levels below 15 kW/m² and achieving 10.7 kW/m² at 120 minutes, supporting occupant tenability and protected means of escape.
The barrier assembly comprises a carbon steel barrel and integrated 24 V d.c. motor, incorporating a high-performance flexible fire curtain fabric capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1000°C. The barrel deflection complies with BS 6323-5, ensuring structural stability across large openings, with standard curtain sizes available up to 8000 mm x 8000 mm. A two-section bottom rail provides consistent tension and controlled descent, ensuring reliable gravity fail-safe operation in the event of power or system failure.
Designed for seamless integration into architectural environments, the Flameshield curtain can be concealed above ceiling lines and is available with colour-finished end plates, guides and hoods, enabling coordination with interior design requirements without compromising fire performance.
The system incorporates a two-stage closing operation, delayed descent options and fully tested ancillary equipment including egress switches, access switches, obstruction detection, and heat and smoke activation devices, all tested to Annex H of BS 8524-1. Optional audible and visual warning systems, including voice warning devices, enhance safety during deployment.
Fire, radiation and smoke containment performance has been independently tested and approved by Warrington Fire Research Centre and Exova, in accordance with BS 8524-1, BS EN 1634-1 (fire and radiation) and BS EN 1634-3 (smoke containment).
