Drapers Garden, London - JAKOB Rope and Rod Green Wall Incorporating Bat Boxes to contribute to wildlife habitats.

MMA Architectural Systems Ltd

In order to achieve the BREEAM rating of “Excellent”, the fourteen storey building, constructed in 2009 in London’s Bank Conservation Area, incorporated several sustainable features, including our rope and rod Green Wall System. To create the ideal habitat for wildlife, the green wall design included bat boxes; providing a safe place for bats in the city.Green walls can be used in cities to help improve the local air quality by trapping dust and pollutants; in addition to absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Green walls can also be used as an effective graffiti deterrent in areas where this is an issue, as green walls make the application of graffiti to structures near impossible, and this is just one of many benefits of green walls. Additionally, the green wall is helping to provide cleaner air in the urban environment – and looks great!

JAKOB Wire Rope Balustrade at Canary Wharf

JAKOB Wire Rope Balustrade at Canary Wharf

MMA Architectural Systems Ltd

Project Focus: 7km of Wire Ropes for New Canary Wharf Station. We supplied and installed over 7km of Jakob stainless steel Vissline wire ropes to form the elegant and robust balustrades that surround the stunning new Canary Wharf station. With the new Elizabeth Line station located next to the old Canary Wharf Docks, the design of the wire rope balustrades clearly echoes the nautical history of the area, with the stainless steel specification also dictated by the need for high corrosion-resistance and low-maintenance.Installed across a series of phases, the high quality 316 grade stainless steel wire ropes were selected not only for their durability and longevity, but also their aesthetics. The Jakob ropes were all purpose-manufactured off-site, with built-in tolerances to make installation fast and straightforward.During the detailed design phase, we proposed changing the design to incorporate Jakob’s precision-engineered Vissline thread-ends, which would make the stainless steel wire rope balustrade stronger and put less force on the end posts. As they are much smaller than traditional swaged thread-ends, the use of Vissline, together with a ‘double-turnbuckle’ arrangement, enabled us to reduce the size and visual impact of the tensioners and fixings, and allowed the ropes to be fixed to intermediate posts rather than just being fixed at the ends. This meant that rather than all of the tensioning force of the ropes being on the ends, the force is spread more evenly between intermediate posts (so if someone were to accidentally tread on one of the ropes, the force will mostly be constrained to a ‘bay’ between which the ropes are tensioned). Our team was involved at every stage of the project, from early design support and product advice on the stainless steel balustrades for the park level, north boardwalk and promenade ends of the station, right through to product supply and installation.

This spiral ramp, designed for both walkers and cyclists, serves as a vital link between the Stockport Interchange and various parts of the town centre. The ramp is a new key infrastructural element that improves accessibility, by connecting Stockport’s Viaduct Park with the Transport Interchange and providing improved links to the town centre and the River Mersey. The modern spiral ramp allows pedestrians and cyclists to navigate the elevation changes effortlessly, ensuring a smooth and safe passage.Given its purpose and the volume of traffic it accommodates, the project required materials that not only met the highest safety standards but also offered longevity and visual appeal. Our spectral black stainless steel Webnet balustrades met the brief perfectly, providing essential safety features as well as contributing to the aesthetic appeal and functional value of the infrastructure. The Role of Stainless Steel WebnetFor this project, we supplied and installed spectral stainless steel Webnet balustrades. Our Webnet system is renowned for its robustness, flexibility, and unobtrusive design, making it an ideal choice for the Stockport Ramp. Here’s why Webnet was the perfect fit for this project:Safety and Security: The primary function of any balustrade is to ensure the safety of users. The stainless steel Webnet offers exceptional strength and stability, providing a secure barrier for walkers and cyclists alike, a crucial requirement for applications with high volumes of foot traffic.Durability: Given the outdoor setting of the ramp, the materials used needed to withstand various weather conditions. The spectral black treatment and stainless-steel work hand in hand to resist corrosion, ensuring that the structure remains sturdy and visually appealing over a long period.Aesthetic Appeal: While functionality and durability are crucial, the visual aspect cannot be overlooked. One of the standout features of Webnet is its ability to provide safety without obstructing views. This transparency ensures that the ramp feels open, airy and welcoming, rather than enclosed and restricted.Installation and ExecutionThe installation of the Webnet balustrades was carried out with precision and efficiency by our experienced team. The spiral nature and the height of the ramp posed certain challenges, but our expertise in working with Webnet systems ensured that we could adapt to the unique requirements of the project. Each section of the balustrade was meticulously measured and fitted to guarantee a seamless installation.Connecting the CommunityThe Stockport Ramp is more than just an architectural feature; it is a vital connecting corridor for the community.
