OVERVIEW
Market Arcade, a Victorian shopping arcade nestled in the heart of Newport, Wales, has not only served as a retail hub but also as
a vital pedestrian thoroughfare connecting High Street and Newport Market. This architectural gem holds a special place in history, being the second oldest Victorian arcade still in operation in Wales, the oldest in Newport, and one of the oldest in the UK. Market Arcade, originally known as Fennell’s Arcade, opened its doors in 1869. Later, in the early 20th century, it acquired the name Flowers Arcade, reflecting the businesses that adorned its interior. However, by the early 2000s, before its much-needed renovation, the arcade had fallen into disrepair. It stood unlit, showing signs of structural decline, and was plagued by anti-social behaviour and damage.
