A green wall as a sustainable solution for an environmentally friendly renovation

OVERVIEW

Urban Planters contributed to the extensive renovation of the Tri-Centre 3 building in Swindon. The aim of this project is to achieve various environmental and sustainability goals. To accomplish these objectives, Urban Planters proposed the MobiPanel living wall system.

The key to eco-friendly building renovations

Jane Leese, the National Business Development Manager at Urban Planters, explains that this system is a crucial component of the strategy to enhance the building’s environmental friendliness: “The building underwent a large-scale renovation, and the client aimed to achieve various environmental and sustainability goals. For this reason, we offered the MobiPanel system for their internal green wall, as it is made from recycled materials, fully recyclable and can even be relocated to another site if needed in the future.”

A green look for healthier spaces

At the Tri-Centre 3 building in Swindon, the reception area is enhanced with MobiPanel, an innovative green wall system that promotes sustainability and biodiversity. The modular system features interchangeable plant cassettes, each placed in gutter profiles that act as water reservoirs. Using capillary action, the plants efficiently absorb water, ensuring minimal consumption and no waste. The green wall covers a total area of 28.32 m² and contains approximately 1300 plants, including Asplenium Nidus ‘Campio’, Asplenium Antiquum ‘Osaka’, Scindapsus Pictus and Croton (Codiaeum) variegatum ‘Petra’. These plants were selected to meet the client’s needs for air purification, sustainability, and creating a healthy indoor environment.

Space-saving, health-promoting and aesthetically enriching

MobiPanel takes up minimal space and significantly improves indoor air quality and climate. A green wall provides 5% humidity, increasing to 17% in winter. This leads to improved concentration, productivity and overall well-being, while also enhancing room acoustics. Additionally, the system offers insulating and sound-absorbing benefits, contributing to a stress-reducing environment. Research from Wageningen University has shown that a green wall makes individuals feel 71% healthier, 36% happier, and 65% more energetic.

The final result of the green wall is highly satisfying. Not only does it meet the client’s expectations in terms of aesthetics, but it also fulfills the desired functions of air purification and biophilic design. The green wall enriches the space with its aesthetic and sustainable characteristics.
