A green wall as a sustainable solution for an environmentally friendly renovation

A green wall as a sustainable solution for an environmentally friendly renovation

Mobilane

Urban Planters contributed to the extensive renovation of the Tri-Centre 3 building in Swindon. The aim of this project is to achieve various environmental and sustainability goals. To accomplish these objectives, Urban Planters proposed the MobiPanel living wall system. The key to eco-friendly building renovationsJane Leese, the National Business Development Manager at Urban Planters, explains that this system is a crucial component of the strategy to enhance the building’s environmental friendliness: “The building underwent a large-scale renovation, and the client aimed to achieve various environmental and sustainability goals. For this reason, we offered the MobiPanel system for their internal green wall, as it is made from recycled materials, fully recyclable and can even be relocated to another site if needed in the future.”A green look for healthier spacesAt the Tri-Centre 3 building in Swindon, the reception area is enhanced with MobiPanel, an innovative green wall system that promotes sustainability and biodiversity. The modular system features interchangeable plant cassettes, each placed in gutter profiles that act as water reservoirs. Using capillary action, the plants efficiently absorb water, ensuring minimal consumption and no waste. The green wall covers a total area of 28.32 m² and contains approximately 1300 plants, including Asplenium Nidus ‘Campio’, Asplenium Antiquum ‘Osaka’, Scindapsus Pictus and Croton (Codiaeum) variegatum ‘Petra’. These plants were selected to meet the client’s needs for air purification, sustainability, and creating a healthy indoor environment.Space-saving, health-promoting and aesthetically enrichingMobiPanel takes up minimal space and significantly improves indoor air quality and climate. A green wall provides 5% humidity, increasing to 17% in winter. This leads to improved concentration, productivity and overall well-being, while also enhancing room acoustics. Additionally, the system offers insulating and sound-absorbing benefits, contributing to a stress-reducing environment. Research from Wageningen University has shown that a green wall makes individuals feel 71% healthier, 36% happier, and 65% more energetic. The final result of the green wall is highly satisfying. Not only does it meet the client’s expectations in terms of aesthetics, but it also fulfills the desired functions of air purification and biophilic design. The green wall enriches the space with its aesthetic and sustainable characteristics.

Mobilane

For the new distribution centre at Schiphol Trade Park along the A4, living walls have been realised with MobiPanel, the living wall system from Mobilane. With a total surface spanning 750 m2, the facades of the new distribution centre is greened with the latest generation vertical green from Mobilane.Sustainable and innovative distribution centreA lot of attention has been paid to the appearance of the new distribution centre. With the design of Dedato Architecten, sustainability has not only been taken into account on the inside, but also sustainability at the outside of the building has been taken into consideration by including nature-inclusitivity. Dick Venneman, architect and owner of Dedato Architecten tells: “It is a building with its own characteristic appearance, a landmark from the highway. The building is in its materials friendly and accessible. The different surfaces in the facade gives it a human approach. The living walls and the vertically placed solar panels tells something about the sustainability of the building and plays a role in the preservation of biodiversity in the area”. In addition, the MobiPanel living walls makes the environment more sustainable and improves air quality. The installation of the living walls was carried out by Mobicare in collaboration with Zoontjens Boomprojecten. In addition to the living walls, Zoontjens also installed two large roof gardens with various trees, shrubs and 2,600 MobiRoof ECO sedum cassettes totalling 650 square metres.Distribution centre 2.0 Schiphol Trade ParkThe building spans 30.000 m2 of which 3000 m2 is available for offices. Under the distribution centre, there is a car park spanning 7500 m2 with space for 270 cars. The construction of the new distribution centre began in 2020 and is delivered by Dijkham Bouw BV. “From the environment, wellbeing and to prevent a paved environment, for the design it has been chosen to implement living walls, green roofs and ground level. We are very satisfied about this procedure. The execution is very good, the communication was good”, according to Marcel Smeets – Coordinator at Dijkham Bouw BV. The distribution centre was developed by Minerva Development. Minerva Development is an independent developer with years of experience in the development and realisation of business premises. “Since Schiphol Trade Park has set the goal of becoming one the most sustainable logistics centre, as developers we were very happy to take on the challenge. Next to all other facilities such as solar panels, we have opted for a lot of greenery in the design. Not only on the facades, but also in the surroundings of the building and on the roof. We are very happy with the end result and proud of the fact that because of the living walls, this is by far the most beautiful DC in the area. We are very curious about what the result will be over a few months when everything is in bloom”, Bob Lukassen – Minerva Development.Latest generation vertical greenFor greening the distribution, it was chosen for the new living wall system MobiPanel from Mobilane. MobiPanel is an innovative, sustainable and lightweight system for living walls. It is a modular and circular system consisting of omega profiles and pregrown plant cassettes (40 x 40 cm), provided with an automatic irrigation and drainage system. The plants in the cassettes receive water through capillary action. MobiPanel can be installed on flat or curved walls and is suitable for different types of walls, including certain types of sandwich panels. For the facades of the new distribution centre, sandwich panels from Cladding Point have been used. “With Mobilane, as a global expert with many years of experience, we can continue to lead the way in innovation and sustainability. Ecological upgrade of the HOFER branch with a blooming, green facade

Ecological upgrade of the HOFER branch with a blooming, green facade

Mobilane

The spacious car park with surrounding shops in the Atzgersdorf district of the 23rd district of Vienna was due for an upgrade to sustainability and needed to become more ecological in order to contribute to the restoration of greenery in the area.A friendlier and greener image is created by adding green spaces, trees and parks around the car park and shops, benefiting the living environment for both people and animals. The management of HOFER KG initiated this project and also wanted to contribute with a green facade for the branch.Active in climate protectionHOFER is actively committed to climate protection. Their motto is “Sustainable measures for a GOOD FUTURE.” “Green facades, the reduction of the heat island effect and the associated increase in quality of life in the immediate vicinity of the shops are key components of this.” The idea for the green facade had already gained good support from management and since a branch in England had previously installed something similar, they were quickly convinced by the Mobilane system.MobiPanel meets the ‘green’ expectationsIn search of a party capable of realizing such a project, they came into contact with landscape architect Dipl.-Ing. Ralf Dopheide from GartenBox, who helped further develop the idea. Mr. Dopheide is also active as an ecological advisor at ‘Grün statt Grau’ (Integrated Knowledge Centre for Green Building), an organization dedicated to bringing more greenery to the city, and therefore has knowledge of and experience with various green systems. However, it turns out that some systems do not deliver the expected results and are not easy to install or maintain. The MobiPanel system from Mobilane meets expectations; it is easy and modular to install, has an attractive black backing, is cohesive and covering, and provides excellent water supply.Facade greening as a tool for ecological revitalizationHOFER’s goal, in addition to its ecological contribution, was to create a lush green facade with subtle floral colours that align with the brand’s identity and logo, which has a prominent place in the center of the facade. “It is also important for us to have a wide selection of robust, frost-resistant perennials and herbs that surprise with new and attractive blooms from spring to autumn.” In response to this request, Ralf Dopheide created a planting plan focused on evergreen plants and blooms in yellow, red and orange hues. The facade was entirely built up with empty cassettes, after which the substrate was applied and the plants were placed in. It was a challenge to get the plants into good condition on the facade, as it was very hot during the installation. Some plants drooped a bit due to the heat, but they recovered beautifully in the well-watered system. After four weeks, the facade was fully covered and green, despite the heat during its construction.Facade greening creates habitats and food for many insect speciesHOFER says: “On extremely hot days, the air temperature and surface temperature of the building are lowered, and the relative humidity is increased. This significantly contributes to improving the quality of life in the city. The reduction of fine dust, oxygen production, CO2 binding and noise pollution are other benefits of green facades, especially in larger cities. In addition to the microclimatic effects and advantages, we want to use facade greening to make the area around the store more attractive and to revitalize it in an ecologically valuable way. Facade greening creates habitats and food for many insect species, such as bees and butterflies, thereby promoting biodiversity.”Satisfaction and praise all aroundPassersby and customers enjoy looking at the facade and respond very positively and enthusiastically to the plants and the overall appearance. The bee hotel that HOFER proudly added near the facade also attracts a lot of attention and positivity. There is widespread acclaim and praise for the excellent collaboration between HOFER, Dopheide and Mobilane, as well as for the end result and the positive experience with the MobiPanel green facade system. “As a green and landscaping company, GartenBox, we receive great support from the Mobilane team. The result is a lush and blooming facade that was already green just a few days after planting,” says Ralf Dopheide. “Definitely worth repeating,” both HOFER and Ralf Dopheide agree. And that repetition is on the way, as another HOFER branch is already planned for greening.

Future-proof Renovation of Healthcare Facility Lunet Rapelenberg through Implementation of Green Roof and Green Walls

Future-proof Renovation of Healthcare Facility Lunet Rapelenberg through Implementation of Green Roof and Green Walls

Mobilane

Healthcare facility Lunet Rapelenberg in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands, has undergone a sustainable metamorphosis, focusing on both aesthetic renewal and environmentally conscious renovation. By installing a green roof and green walls, the complex is being futureproofed.Sustainable Building for a Healthy Living EnvironmentA crucial part of this sustainable approach is the utilization of the MobiPanel-system for green walls. Lunet Rapelenberg has installed green walls above the entrance and on the sides of the building, with a total area of approximately 64m² and featuring 10 different types of plants, taking into account the orientation of the façade. The green walls are controlled by an automatic irrigation system, partially using rainwater collected on the green-yellow-blue roof. This contributes to climate-resilient building and creates a healthy living environment with improved air purification and temperature regulation.Positive Effects of Green Roof and Green WallsThe initial positive results are already apparent, with a significant 37% decrease in gas consumption compared to last year and an increase in biodiversity around the buildings. This is enhanced by the installation of bee hotels and nest boxes around the green walls, attracting important pollinators.Overall, the project at Rapelenberg demonstrates how green initiatives coupled with technological innovations such as the green wall system can have a positive impact on the environment, user comfort, and biodiversity. “Establishing a green-yellow-blue roof and green walls does not directly translate into a better energy rating,” explains Rob Jansen of Woningbelang. “But that was not the goal either. Climate adaptation, user comfort, and biodiversity are the big winners. Of course, ensuring the roof is waterproof remains crucial, but in practice, these themes turned out to be perfectly reconcilable.”Resident Comfort for Humans and AnimalsThese green initiatives, carried out by Knaapen Groep BV, go beyond energy saving. They contribute to climate adaptation by capturing and reusing rainwater, improve user comfort, and stimulate biodiversity by providing insects with a habitat. “If you create a green roof, you can also create a blue roof, where rainwater temporarily accumulates. For the generation of sustainable energy, the plan came for a yellow roof: the installation of solar panels,” says project leader Henk Snijders. Meanwhile, residents indicated that the indoor climate is far from optimal. “This leads to the idea of also addressing the ventilation system. Because of all that, you become increasingly enthusiastic. That’s why we went very far with this design scheme. A green-blue-yellow roof, new window frames, no more soundproofing boxes, and a heat recovery system.”

The office, located along a busy road, now benefits from both visual and environmental advantages. “Our building is situated along a busy road. A green facade offers both visual and environmental benefits in such an urban setting,” says Joyce Viergever, Project and Facility Manager at Keiretsu Europe.Sustainability embedded in the business strategySustainability is a key focus within Keiretsu Europe. “At Keiretsu Europe, our mission is to run our business in a sustainable and responsible manner. We have firmly embedded our CSR objectives into our business strategy and daily operations, aiming for benefits for all our stakeholders, the environment, and society,” Viergever explains. The green facade seamlessly aligns with this mission and visibly contributes to the greening and sustainability of the building.Increased biodiversity and lower maintenance costsOne striking advantage that Keiretsu Europe has experienced is the increase in biodiversity around the building. “We now see more birds, butterflies, and insects around the premises,” Viergever says enthusiastically. Additionally, the green facade has resulted in significant cost savings. “We have little to no expenses for facade cleaning!” The vegetation acts as a natural protective layer, reducing the accumulation of dirt and dust, which lowers maintenance costs in the long run.Innovative and user-friendly systemEase of use played a crucial role in the selection of the green facade system. “The system features an advanced irrigation system that can be controlled remotely, making it much easier and allowing the experts to do their work,” Viergever explains. This smart irrigation system ensures that the plants always receive the right amount of water without requiring daily monitoring. Additionally, the cassette system makes it easy to replace plants or check the condition of the facade, contributing to the longevity and flexibility of the installation.Aesthetics and appearance: the perfect urban jungle lookIn addition to its functional benefits, the aesthetic value of the green facade is an important aspect. “We already have an amazing building, but the greenery completes it and gives it the perfect urban jungle look,” says Viergever. The green facade provides a fresh, vibrant appearance and makes Keiretsu Europe’s striking building even more eye-catching. Both employees and clients have responded positively to the green transformation. The green facade not only contributes to a pleasant working environment but also reinforces the company’s sustainable image.Green facades as a smart investmentKeiretsu Europe B.V. demonstrates that a green facade is a smart investment for companies looking to enhance and future-proof their buildings. In the heart of the largest park in the upscale Rotterdam neighborhood of Prinsenland lies the nature-inclusive apartment complex Prinsenpark, which features 82 luxury suites and penthouses, along with an underground private parking garage. In addition to the planted trees and various planters on the balustrades and balconies, over 3,300 plants have been incorporated into the MobiPanel green facades alone, justifying its designation as a nature-inclusive complex. These green facades, totaling 90 square meters, support the local ecosystem and provide a habitat for small animals and insects.Integration of the building into the natural environment The iconic building features multiple terraced floors and incorporates various types of greenery to seamlessly integrate the complex into its natural surroundings. A true eye-catcher in the inner courtyard is the arched green facade adorned with unique plant species. These plants are arranged in a wavy pattern that appears to follow the upward movement of the staircase. The different colours of the leaves and flowers add an extra dimension to the pattern, while the diverse flowers in the facade create a delightful sensory experience in terms of scent and colour for both humans and animals.Impressed by the technology behind the green facades The planner and executor from the local landscaping company responsible for maintaining this massive project is impressed by the technology behind the MobiPanel green facades. “The intelligent irrigation system, in particular, features sensors that monitor the soil moisture in the plant cassettes and control how much and how often the system automatically provides water and nutrients. The technicians from Mobilane offer clear explanations about how the MobiPanel system works, what to pay attention to and how to maintain it. It’s reassuring to know that we can always reach out to Mobilane with additional questions regarding the maintenance of the facades and the irrigation system.” The planting in the green facade has been specially selected based on the sunlight exposure in the inner courtyard and its orientation to the sun, ensuring that the plants can thrive under the most favourable conditions. Maintenance will occur several times a year and will include visual inspections of the plants’ health, adjustments to the watering or nutrient systems and pruning. The greenery provides a beautiful connection to the adjacent waterway with its natural banks and clusters of trees. Together with the rooftop garden, the green facades, and the varied greenery surrounding the building block, this creates a unique living space in Rotterdam.

ESSENZA HOME opts for a sustainable green façadeInterior and lifestyle brand ESSENZA HOME has moved into a new, completely renovated office in Bunnik in 2021. The new office is entirely sustainability-oriented. The Mobilane green façade at Essenza Home contributes to the company’s sustainability vision and provides a warm welcome for its retailers, customers, and staff. Family business ESSENZA HOME has been designing, producing, and distributing home & living products to suit various interior styles for 60 years. In 2021, the company moved to a new office in Bunnik. The building of no less than 2500 m2 is located directly on the A12 motorway. The new premises was built with an eye to the future and aligned with their sustainability vision. Therefore, the sustainable green Mobilane façade was a logical choice.Installation of the green façadeThe installation of the green walls was quick and easy. The green walls, with a total surface area of over 200 square meters, were placed against the stone and wooden façade by means of Magnelis steel omega profiles. The design incorporated the window and door sections and the water and electricity pipes. The almost 10,000 plants are installed in modular cassettes and pixels attached to the profiles. All of the cassettes, pixels, and covers are made of a fire-retardant EPP (B-s2, d0). This material is light, UV-resistant, air-permeable (for good root growth), and fully recyclable. An automated irrigation system provides the MobiPanel green walls with water and nutrients.Plant selection for the green façadeThe plants in the green facades were selected according to various factors. The orientation of the façade, the different flowering seasons, plants that stimulate biodiversity, and, finally, aesthetics were all considered. For example, Bregenis ‘Bressingham White’ is a beautiful spring bloomer with elegant white flowers that bloom from April onwards. The Vinca minor is a strong evergreen covering plant. It also flowers very early in spring. Vinca minor can be used on facades in both sunny and shady spots. The Vinca will produce more flowers in the sun than in the shade. Geranium Rozanne is a carrier plant for wild bees. Many species of wild bees, as well as butterflies and bumblebees, find their nectar here.Advantages of the green façadeThe green wall on the two outer walls is a real eye-catcher. Floor Smits, Head of Brands and second generation in the family business: “As a family business, we find it important to focus on the long term. During the renovation, we, therefore, invested heavily in sustainable solutions. When we were introduced to the possibility of a vertical garden for the façade, we were immediately enthusiastic. The green wall has many advantages, such as purifying the air, increasing biodiversity, and providing a nice haven for bees and other insects. Finally, we want to make a statement and show that we are committed to a sustainable world.” In addition to the office, there is also a b2b showroom and a brand store will be opened for consumers this year.Increased biodiversityRosalie Smits, Head of Channels and also the second generation of the family business, indicates that biodiversity is an important spearhead for the organization. The green façade attracts many insects, thus stimulating biodiversity in the area. As described earlier, the flowers of Geranium Rozanne, among others, provide nectar for many insects such as the wild bee and butterflies. Wild bees and butterflies are an important link in our food chain. They provide 60% of the pollination of our fruit and vegetables. The facades also attract various birds and other insects and serve both as food and as nesting and hiding places. In the cassettes between the plants, birds can nest safely. The first bird’s nest in the green façade at Essenza Home was found just a few weeks after installation.Client: ESSENZA HOMEArchitect: BK PuntConstruction period: 2021Installation: MobiCare

The company Julius Blum GmbH, based in Vorarlberg in Austria, chose to provide all of the roofed pause areas and bicycle sheds around its factory in Bregenz with a sustainable green MobiRoof Eco roof.Blum is a global company specialising in the production and sale of furniture fittings. As a co-founder of Turn to Zero (formerly Climate Neutrality Alliance 2025), the manufacturer has voluntarily committed itself to reducing its overall CO2 emissions as much as possible. At its eight sites in Vorarlberg, the carbon footprint has already been reduced by 40% by using strictly electricity from rural river power plants.Leading the way with green roofs for 25 yearsBlum has been applying green roofs on their own premises for almost 25 years. Six of Austria’s eight factories now have green roofs. The green roofs have been applied everywhere where they fall in line with further infrastructure development on the sites and where the structural condition of the buildings allows. Blum, like Mobilane, values the preservation of a liveable environment for future generations. When expanding its own infrastructure, the family-owned company always takes into account the promotion of biodiversity. ‘The benefits of green roofs are considerable and we are keen to make use of them. As part of the expansion of Plant 6, numerous green outdoor spaces were created with a focus on biodiversity. Around our largest plant in Bregenz, plant 4, we were also able to implement a multifaceted biodiversity concept. We replaced the outdated bicycle sheds and greened them with MobiRoof ECO,’ says Mark Arlanch, who is responsible for building technology at Blum.Sustainable and easy to maintainBlum wanted not only to green the roofs of the large buildings, but also to use the many small roofs of the pause areas and bicycle sheds as compensation zones. ‘Mobilane’s MobiRoof ECO sedum cassettes are so easy to use that anyone can install them without much effort. Thanks to the dense vegetation, green roof maintenance is very easy. We had all our own roof structures custom-made, taking into account the standard dimensions of Mobilane’s pre-planted sedum cassettes,’ says Mark Arlanch of Blum.MobiRoof ECOMobiRoof ECO cassettes are put together like a jigsaw puzzle to create a continuous green roof in no time. MobiRoof ECO is a system developed with circularity in mind. The cassettes are made of recycled polypropylene, which is strong, durable and in turn also fully recyclable. They are filled with substrate and perennial sedum species, such as white stonecrop (Sedum album), carpet bantam (sedum spurium) and tripadam (Sedum rupetre), sourced from certified sustainable cultivation. The plant layer is not only an eye-catcher, but also has an insulating and sound-absorbing effect. In addition, the green roof improves air quality by reducing carbon dioxide and absorbing particulates to some extent and promotes local biodiversity. The substrate layer in the cassettes not only serves as a growing medium, but also provides drainage and water storage. The water storage capacity is about 20 litres per square metre. The capacity can even be increased by adding a drainage layer under the cassette. The unit also protects the roof from weather influences. The MobiRoof ECO green roof system is therefore eligible for subsidies and tax breaks.

Rainwater as a sustainable source for watering living walls

Rainwater as a sustainable source for watering living walls

Mobilane

The new office of housing corporation Casade in Kaatsheuvel sets a new standard in sustainable construction and rainwater management. This project combines innovation with environmentally conscious choices to create a modern and healthy working environment for Casade’s employees. Alongside the connecting spatial quality inside the building, one of the most striking and inspiring features of this office is the integration of living walls and rooftop gardens irrigated with harvested rainwater.Casade sets a new standard in sustainable constructionAt Casade’s new office, all rainwater falling on the building is collected and utilized for the irrigation of the living walls and the vegetation on and around the premises. “The retention capacity is tailored to the need, ensuring little to no reliance on mains water. We will monitor this,” explains Jos Mastop, Director of Mastop Totaaltechniek. Marco Matheeuwsen, Coordinator of Finance and Sustainability at housing corporation Casade, adds: “It is our requirement to utilize all rainwater from the building and premises on-site. We strongly embraced the cascade principle for water management, where rainwater is collected, reused, and applied locally in various steps before possibly being discharged. This ensures efficient and sustainable water use.”Efficient irrigation of living wallsThe innovative water management system contributes to the project’s sustainability in multiple ways. “Using rainwater instead of costly drinking water is, of course, a significant step forward. So far, mains water has been relatively cheap, but water utilities are gradually facing limits when it comes to supply security,” explains Jos Mastop. By reusing rainwater for the vegetation, an important step is also taken toward more efficient water use and reducing environmental impact. Marco Matheeuwsen emphasizes: “This approach aligns with our ambition to build in a climate-adaptive and sustainable way. We didn’t just want a technically sound solution but also aimed to contribute to a more pleasant living and working environment for both our employees and the surrounding residents. The focus on greenery fits perfectly into this urbanized area, making the overall environment more livable.”Collaboration as a key factor“We initially participated in a tender process, but another landscape architect was selected to design the project,” explains Jasperina Venema of Van Helvoirt Groenprojecten. “However, they were less familiar with the technical aspects of the unique rooftop gardens we implemented here. As a result, we were eventually brought into the construction team with the agreement that we would also execute the project ourselves.”This collaboration proved crucial to the project’s success. Jasperina continues: “The way we reuse rainwater to green the entire building is highly innovative and goes well beyond merely retaining rainwater on-site. Rainwater is stored on several roofs in high-capacity retention crates and used for irrigating the living walls, rooftop gardens, vegetation on canopy edges, and ground-level plantings. Additionally, the green design contributes to promoting biodiversity by providing nesting opportunities for birds and food for insects.”Innovative solutions and challenges“The way we utilized rainwater is still a new approach, so it took quite some time to engineer it properly,” explains Jasperina. “It placed additional demands on the roof structures and façades. Moreover, an irrigation system had to be developed that was both suitable and reliable for the living walls. If rainwater is unavailable, the system automatically switches to mains water. Through intensive collaboration with the installers in the construction team, we managed to achieve this.”Another challenge was coordinating the installation schedule. “The work had to follow the construction progress but also had its own timeline. For example, the living walls could only be installed once the retention roof and irrigation system were completed,” Jasperina explains. “This occasionally created some tensions, but in the end, everything came together successfully.”Use of natural and reusable materialsThe office, designed by Casade and Huizenhoog Architecten, was built with sustainability and future-proofing as key pillars. In addition to the living walls, numerous other sustainable measures have been implemented. More than half of all materials used in the building are biobased, recycled, or reusable, and the insulation is made from natural materials. The building has a low energy demand and is equipped with solar panels and a battery system featuring smart energy management to ease the load on the grid. This contributes to lower CO2 emissions and the generation of renewable energy.Inspiration for the future“A green environment benefits the well-being of employees and visitors,” says Jasperina. “Casade’s target group—tenants with smaller budgets—and the employees who work closely with them benefit from a workplace that promotes health and well-being. Moreover, Casade demonstrates that a housing corporation can address societal issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss.”By integrating smart technologies, Casade shows that living walls are not only aesthetically appealing but also serve a functional purpose in sustainable construction. “This project is a great example of how new solutions can be applied to other projects as well,” Jasperina concludes.

The living green wall above the entrance to new-build project ‘The Leeuwerik’ enchants everyone

The living green wall above the entrance to new-build project ‘The Leeuwerik’ enchants everyone

Mobilane

New building project ‘The Leeuwerik’ in Halsteren, an apartment complex with 3 interconnected buildings, as well as the adjacent square, was all about a natural and biodiverse appearance. By adding lots of greenery, both around the square and vertical greenery on the facade of the new ‘Leeuwerik’, it has become a lively place. The green entrance with real plants in particular is an eye-catcher and a valuable enrichment of the neighbourhood “Vogelenzang” in Halsteren.Commissioned by Housing corporation Stadlander, the complex was designed by Roos Ros architects. An area around the entrance was already reserved for a living green wall in the first drawings. The vision was to give the new area a natural and green appearance and to integrate the new building, with colours inspired by the lark (the bird) The wall consists of 3 horizontal sections 7 metres wide and a total surface area of 27.5 m2 of MobiPanel, incorporating over a thousand plants. An aesthetic contribution to greeningProject developer Joab Ventevogel of Stadlander; “In the construction team, it became clear that we wanted to add greenery and the choice was made for the green facade. Stadlander, like Mobilane, also stands for biodiversity and wants to contribute to a greener environment. In this project, we also felt it to be important that this green facade would be aesthetically visible at the top of that square.”Both before and during construction, the installation of the green entrance had to be considered. Joab Ventevogel wanted to make sure that the chosen system would comply with building regulations, be easy to install and, above all, easy to maintain. Fire safety is also an issue with these types of projects. The MobiPanel green facade system meets the highest achievable European fire class for green facades; B-s2, d0.“Ultimately, it was Building Company Schrijver who said ‘we want to work with this system’ and so I tested it in outlines. We are, of course, the owner of the property and with my background in maintenance and exploitation, I needed to understand how the system works and ensure that there wouldn’t be much maintenance required later. So we did look into that. The MobiPanel system is unique in that respect: it can be controlled remotely in terms of water supply and nutrients through an automatic device, which shuts off in case of frost. It made me very happy that we would be making an investment without having to put in a lot of work and time to keep it beautiful. Your product is also very complete in terms of technology, it’s modular and the planting can be customized as required. The vegetation has been carefully selected for the location; ensuring that different colours emerge throughout the year, that it contributes to biodiversity and is well suited to the wind and sun direction. I am very happy with it.”Live evidence of an increase in biodiversityResidents are also very happy with the natural look given by the green wall. Pieter and Annet Mennen, residents of the complex, think it’s fabulous. “We happen to live right next to that wall, I am so happy with it. I can just imagine that in spring, birds will nest in it and we’ll be able to enjoy the twittering and the flying off and on of all kinds of birds. It just makes you happy!”Exactly this sentiment is what we like to hear from end users. After all, studies do show that a living vertical green wall can make a huge contribution to biodiversity, but the confirmation from residents who see this happening in real life is surely the best proof that our systems work well and are therefore increasingly chosen for greening real estate. At an earlier stage in the development of this green wall, project leader Peter Ventevogel of Building Company Schrijver was also faced with the choice of which system to use for the realisation of the green wall outlined by the architect.A good story with a good price“I was familiar with the concept of a green facade, having heard of it, but I had not directly carried out such a project before. So, then I started searching the internet for companies that offer green facade solutions and Mobilane was one of them. So I had visits from several parties, including Mobilane, and as a result of those conversations, they prepared a quote for the green facade. They showed the materials, how it is connected and what the working method is, so that was top-notch. Combined with the conversation and the price, including that of competitors, we ended up choosing Mobilane.”His honesty dictates that it was mainly the combination of a good story and price issue that was the deciding factor for him to choose Mobilane. In the end, there were several positive processes during the collaboration that ensured the overall experience was very positive. “Everything that was promised upfront was delivered afterwards, even with the preparation and during installation everything went well. Good documentation was provided and they did on-site checks. The implementation also went well; there was a preliminary consultation, a planning and then it was installed accordingly, including the adjustment work for the watering system. That was a bit of a grey area for a contractor, but was well discussed upfront, especially the placement of the wiring. Of course, when the time comes, it must be properly adjusted and you’ll need an installation engineer for that. That was well coordinated.” All in all, he himself thinks it adds value to the building, “because a green wall like this is better than some cladding. It’s a nice addition to the project.”In consultation with the garden architect and in coordination with the rest of the greenery, i.e. the garden and inner garden, a special mix was chosen for the planting. This mix of plantings includes Campanula Stella, Vinca Minor (both with beautiful blue flowers), yellow-flowered Alchemilla Mollis and various evergreen plants, creating a beautiful and varied picture all year round.
