Project: Priory Church Village, Pontypridd Product: Inset Window Protectors Challenges: High cost and long lead times for full window replacement, need for enhanced patient safety and security Solutions: Installation of bespoke inset window protectors within existing window apertures, providing a secure and cost-effective alternative to full window replacement. Outcome: Significant cost savings, improved security, and timely deliveryBackgroundPriory Church Village is an adult mental health facility in Pontypridd comprising a single-storey, 15-bed main building and three adjacent one-bedroom units, all undergoing a full refurbishment. The facility required enhanced safety measures to support patients while remaining within tight budget constraints. Contour was initially contacted by the appointed architects to explore an alternative to full window replacement for the three smaller units. The quote provided by another supplier for both windows and doors (which were supplied for the main building) was significantly over budget and came with long lead times, prompting the team to seek a more cost-effective and timelier window-only solution for the three smaller units. Having previously worked with Contour on radiator guards for other projects, the architects were keen to explore whether Contour’s window protectors could provide a cost-effective solution. The Challenges The window protection element of the refurbishment presented several key challenges that needed to be addressed to ensure patient safety, meet project timelines, and stay within budget:1. Cost ConstraintsThe original specification included full window and door replacements, which proved prohibitively expensive and pushed the project over budget. The team needed a more cost-effective solution for the windows in the adjacent units without compromising on safety or functionality.2. Lead TimesThe proposed package from another supplier came with long lead times, putting the overall refurbishment schedule at risk. The client required a solution that could be delivered and installed within a tighter timeframe.3. Patient Safety RisksExisting windows raised several concerns, including the risk of escape, potential for glass breakage causing injury, and the possibility of contraband being passed through openings. Any new solution needed to reduce these risks significantly.4. Visual ImpactAs a mental health setting, maintaining a calm and therapeutic environment was essential. Security measures needed to be discreet, with a design that didn’t feel institutional or overly restrictive for residents.Solution ImplementedFollowing a detailed site survey, Contour proposed inset window protectors as a secure and cost-effective alternative to full window replacement. The specification was tailored to meet both the safety requirements of the setting and the project’s financial constraints, with the following key features: Retention of existing windows saved approximately 60% in costs compared to a full window replacement package, keeping the project on budget.Secure compression locks and hidden external fixings offered a clean, non-institutional finish while ensuring tamper resistance.Anti-ligature design with smooth surfaces, no sharp edges, and tight butt strap detail reduced potential ligature points and injury risk.IP3X punched grilles prevented the passing of contraband through openings.Custom vent placements (either to the side or bottom) were tailored to suit the layout and airflow requirements of each room.Frosted units for bathrooms ensured resident privacy without compromising safety.A large modular protector was manufactured to suit a wider window, demonstrating flexibility in design. The installation process included a trial of third-party automatic blinds fitted between the original window and the protector, leading to discussions about a future turnkey solution that would integrate light and ventilation control. Contour not only supplied but also installed all 19 window protectors, ensuring compliance, quality, and speed. This end-to-end delivery helped maintain the programme timeline and gave the client confidence in the durability and performance of the solution.“Contour have been a pleasure to work with on this project. The quality of their products and the efficiency of their team have been spot on from start to finish. Everything arrived on time, the installation was smooth, and the finish was excellent. Their approach helped us stay on schedule and deliver exactly what the client needed.”– Sam Atkins, Carter Thomas Construction LtdConclusion The successful installation at Priory Church Village demonstrated the flexibility and effectiveness of Contour’s window protection solutions in secure care environments. With improved safety and significant savings achieved, the project met both clinical and operational goals without compromising design or budget.

The work spanned nine inpatient wards, all of which presented their own complexities, ranging from standard mental health settings to older people’s mental health, memory and later-life care, learning disability wards, and other specialist behavioural environments.Contour was appointed to supply and install 253 DeepClean Extra radiator guards, tailored for these safety-critical settings. The wards remained operational during the project, meaning clear coordination and minimal disruption were vital. In total, if the guards were placed side by side, they would cover over 508 linear metres of wall space. The Challenges1. Varied and High-risk EnvironmentsThe project spanned multiple care pathways, from acute psychiatric to dementia and learning disability services. Each ward presented a different level of risk, and every installation had to consider potential for ligature points, tampering, and damage. 2. Live Ward InstallationsAccess to patient bedrooms and communal areas was sensitive and had to be coordinated with clinical teams. Work needed to be scheduled flexibly around patient needs, often on short notice. 3. Logistical Complexity Across Three SitesThe project required delivery and installation at multiple hospitals, including the management of waste removal, skip hire, and temporary storage containers. 4. Legacy Infrastructure IssuesIn several areas, outdated anti-ligature radiator covers were found to have been poorly maintained or dangerously adapted, such as pop riveting a secondary mesh to the under side of the grille in a attempt to make it more secure. This unintentionally created further ligature points. 5. Unusual Guard RequirementsA number of bespoke designs were needed, including floor-to-ceiling guards, wall-to-wall installations, and a corner unit in a dining area where we replaced a continuous cover with a smarter, combined setup of guards and pipe boxing for improved aesthetics.Solution ImplementedContour’s DeepClean Extra radiator guards were selected for their proven anti-ligature properties, strength, and full accessibility for cleaning. Key features included: Anti-ligature design with sealed fixings and tamper-resistant constructionIP3X rated anti-ligature grilles to prevent the passing of contraband or insertion of itemsAnti-pick mastic sealing for all edges and wall interfacesFull access for cleaning- the DeepClean Extra design allows internal access without compromising integrityTailored sizing and configurations, including large-scale, continuous units and awkward layouts Contour managed and oversaw the installation from end to end, working closely with its trusted installation partners to ensure a consistent standard of workmanship. Any changes to the programme or on-site challenges were addressed swiftly, with minimal disruption to ward operationsProject HighlightsTotal of 253 guards installed,Spanned 508 linear metres of guard coverageInstalled across nine active inpatient wardsMultiple guard types and configurations, adapted for space and care needsManaged logistics for skip hire and temporary storageClose coordination with ward staff, supporting flexibility and patient dignityFollow-on orders placed for additional areas, including seclusion rooms and a 136 SuiteConclusionThis multi-site project demonstrates Contour’s capacity to deliver at scale while maintaining the precision, care, and adaptability needed in mental health environments. Our team worked closely with on-site staff to manage safety, access, and logistics without impacting patient care. The project addressed serious safety concerns, delivered fully sealed but accessible heating protection, and ultimately enhanced both security and aesthetic standards across a complex NHS estate. Since completion, the Trust has continued to place further orders, a testament to the quality of both product and service delivered.

Radiator Guards for a Private Property in Bournemouth

Radiator Guards for a Private Property in Bournemouth

CONTOUR HEATING PRODUCTS LIMITED

Project: Private Residence with 3:1 Care, Bournemouth  Product: Two DeepClean radiator guards (one in Magnelis), two padded radiator guards  Challenges: Insufficient strength of old guards, complex care needs, restricted fitting space  Solutions: Bespoke DeepClean and padded radiator guards, upgraded grille durability, tailored sizing Outcome: Stronger, safer, and easier-to-clean guards that improve safety and daily care routines BackgroundContour was approached by the family of an adult man with complex needs living at a home in Bournemouth. The property was fitted with padded radiator guards that had been in place since childhood, but as the individual grew into adulthood, they were no longer suitable. The guards were being torn from the wall, creating safety hazards and increasing the risk of exposure to hot surfaces. The individual requires 3:1 care - a reflection of the high level of supervision and support required. Radiator protection needed to be significantly more robust and securely fixed, while remaining safe, cleanable, and appropriate for the home environment. The original guards featured mesh grille panels, which became weak points over time making them easy to tear and ultimately unsuitable for continued use. The ChallengesSeveral key factors needed to be addressed for this project:1. Insufficient Strength of Old GuardsThe padded guards with mesh grilles could be pulled away easily, offering little resistance or long-term durability. 2. Restricted Room Layouts Windowsills, plug sockets, and surrounding furniture limited available space for guard placement, requiring careful design and precise sizing.3. High-Level Care Requirements (3:1 Support)The individual’s complex needs meant the solution had to prioritise both personal safety and peace of mind for carers.Solution ImplementedAfter an initial phone call, Contour requested rough radiator measurements and supporting photos. Using this information, a preliminary quote was issued, accounting for tolerances and layout limitations. Following further discussions and review of the space constraints, we recommended a full site survey to ensure the final guards would be accurate and easy to install. The specification included: Two DeepClean radiator guards, including one in Magnelis for the bathroom to ensure long-term corrosion resistanceTwo upgraded padded radiator guards, built with metal grilles to replace the vulnerable mesh design and withstand tamperingCustom sizing to accommodate the window reveals and nearby electrical outletsA purple finish, recommended by Contour after reviewing images of the current setup, later confirmed as the individual’s favourite colour, much to the customer’s delight While we provided installation pricing, the family opted to have their trusted handyman fit the guards; someone the individual was already familiar with, which supported a smoother transition. Customer Feedback“The radiator guards arrived as promised and [my son] is VERY happy with them. They were fitted by a qualified tradesman (who is a friend of ours) and are solid and so much easier to clean. As they are so secure, the carers do not have to worry when [my son] goes near them. This means he can move around more freely and the carers can relax a bit more, which makes it more pleasant for everyone. I really do appreciate all your help.” ConclusionThis project demonstrates how Contour can tailor heating safety products to meet the specific needs of individuals. The switch from outdated mesh-fronted guards to durable DeepClean and padded units with metal grilles provided a secure, hygienic, and visually appropriate solution. By considering everything from environmental constraints to personal preferences, Contour delivered a result that enhanced both safety and quality of life for the individual and those who support him.

Window Protector Case Study: Inset Unit with Integrated Blind at a Children’s Mental Health Facility Speak to us about your Project

Window Protector Case Study: Inset Unit with Integrated Blind at a Children’s Mental Health Facility Speak to us about your Project

CONTOUR HEATING PRODUCTS LIMITED

Product: Inset window protector with integrated blackout blind and ventilation Challenges: Ongoing glass breakages, privacy concerns, early waking, frustration, and lack of safe light control Solutions: Bespoke inset window protector with integral blackout blind and secure ventilation grille Outcome: Improved sleep, reduced frustration, safer environment, enhanced privacy, and staff reassuranceBackgroundA specialist NHS Assessment and Treatment (A&T) centre for children with complex needs in the Midlands sought urgent support with window safety and light control in one of its ground-floor bedrooms. The ward houses three long-term patients with profound learning disabilities, mental health conditions, and behavioural challenges such as autism. While there was no suicide risk, the environment still required careful design to minimise frustration, injury, and inappropriate use of furnishings. The bedroom in question had become a hotspot for repeated glass breakages. Previously fitted with detachable anti-ligature blinds, these had been removed after being pulled down and used inappropriately as weapons and contraband stash points. This left the young person without any control over privacy or daylight. Her bedroom window faced a courtyard used by staff and accessible from outside the unit, leaving her exposed during the day and frequently waking early due to sunlight. To quickly secure the space, staff had fixed a polycarbonate sheet over the lower portion of the window. However, this was a temporary fix and a more permanent solution needed to be found. The top two opening windows were left exposed to allow ventilation, but the patient climbed up and smashed them from the outside using objects passed through the small openings. The estates team contacted Contour for a better long-term solution – one that would restore comfort, dignity, and security. The ChallengesSeveral key factors needed to be addressed for this project: 1. Inappropriate or Damaged Window TreatmentsDetachable blinds had already proven unfit for purpose. With no privacy or light control, frustration increased, impacting mood and sleep.2. Escalating RiskFollowing multiple incidents of internal glass breakage, the Trust attempted a temporary fix by attaching a polycarbonate sheet over the lower section of the window. However, the two smaller top panes remained accessible for ventilation and these became new targets. The patient was able to climb onto the windowsill and reach outside, smashing the exposed glass from the exterior. This escalation highlighted the limited effectiveness of short-term fixes, as well as the urgent need for a more secure, integrated solution that could restore privacy, reduce frustration, and remove all remaining access to vulnerable glazing.3. Privacy vs VentilationThe unit needed a solution that balanced visual privacy with safe airflow, avoiding sealed units that could compromise air quality or comfort.4. Behaviour-linked Environmental TriggersLight sensitivity and privacy-related stress were contributing to poor sleep, aggressive outbursts, and general deterioration in wellbeing. Solution Implemented Contour designed, supplied and installed a bespoke inset window protector tailored to the bedroom’s needs. The unit featured: Integrated blackout blind: Sealed within the unit, offering privacy and darkness at night while reducing ligature and tamper risksPolycarbonate vision panel: Designed to absorb repeated impact while maintaining visibility and natural light during the daySecure grille and integral ventilation: Ensuring fresh air circulation even when the vision panel is coveredLigature-resistant construction: Minimising any potential risk of self-harm, even though this wasn’t a primary concern in this case The integrated blind was the key feature offering the patient autonomy over her environment for the first time since the removal of the detachable blinds. The ImpactSince the unit was installed: Sleep quality has improved, reducing early waking and promoting a more stable circadian rhythmFrustration and outbursts have decreased, improving both the patient’s wellbeing and staff safetySmashing incidents have stopped - glass is now protectedPrivacy has been restored, crucial for a ground floor bedroomReduced ligature points or removable components, improving safety without removing functionalityAirflow is still maintained thanks to the secure grille and vent The improvement was so noticeable that the Trust has now requested quotations for the remaining three bedrooms in the same area. ConclusionThis project demonstrates that mental health window protection isn’t just about stopping damage; it’s about restoring dignity, enabling better sleep, and helping patients feel more in control. Contour’s inset window protectors with integrated blinds provide a secure, tamper-proof alternative to detachable anti-ligature blinds, with the added benefits of ventilation, hygiene, and long-term durability.

This meant completing surveys and installations only when safe to do so, with minimal disruption.2. High-sensitivity AreasInstallations were required in spaces such as dining rooms, therapy areas, bathrooms, showers, and en suites, all demanding subtle execution and secure results.3. Legacy Infrastructure HazardsIn one case, a large radiator guard beneath a windowsill was found to be insecure and liftable, posing a risk of harm or use as a weapon. As well as installing a new floor mounted radiator guard, the Contour team also secured the windowsill to ensure safety.4. Logistics and Programme ManagementContour managed the skip hire and storage containers for the entire project, ensuring that each phase was delivered cleanly and efficiently. Snagging and schedule changes were handled directly by the Contour team to keep progress on track.Solution ImplementedThe DeepClean Extra floor mounted radiator guards were selected as the most appropriate solution for these mental health environments due to their: Anti-ligature design with smooth edges and tamper-proof fixingsIP3X-rated metal grilles punched directly into the radiator cover, ideal for mental health settingsFull and easy access for internal cleaning, without compromising safetyAnti-pick mastic sealing at edges and jointsCustomised configurations, including flat panel continuous guards, floor-to-ceiling units, and guards with integrated pipe boxing All guards were manufactured from 2mm thick Zintec steel and reinforced with internal strengthening struts. This upgrade was based on the Trust’s prior experiences with damage to less robust covers in similar settings. By choosing a more robust specification, the Trust aimed to extend product lifespan, reduce future maintenance, and ensure the guards remained resilient in challenging, high-impact environments. The added strength was especially important across high-risk spaces like PICUs, dining areas, and seclusion rooms, where impact resistance and reliability are paramount. Each guard was custom sized for its specific location, and the entire installation was delivered by Contour.Project Highlights 196 metal radiator covers installed across multiple live wards266 linear metres of secure floor mounted radiatorsCompleted in phased stages across PICU, CAMHS, and adult mental health wardsSensitive area installs - showers, bathrooms, dining and therapy spacesLegacy risk remedied with improved guard and windowsill fixingFull logistics support, including skip and container hireFollow-on orders already placed for future phasesConclusionThis case study highlights how Contour delivers tailored anti-ligature metal radiator guards for mental health settings, even under the most complex conditions. Product: Six bespoke padded radiator guards with standard grilles Challenges: No existing covers, high risk of injury from falls, varying room layouts Solutions: Padded guards with standard grilles, sloping and flat tops, site visit to confirm measurements Outcome: Discreet, safe radiator protection tailored to the unique needs of vulnerable residentsBackgroundContour was approached by a contractor on behalf of a housing association seeking radiator protection for a supported living property in South Wales. The property is home to individuals with learning difficulties, including two residents who suffer from drop seizures with no warning. These conditions present a high risk of forward falls into hard surfaces, making safety a top priority. The customer was keen to understand whether we offered off-the-shelf sizing or fully bespoke options. After discussing grille styles and safety needs, the client confirmed they required standard grilles rather than anti-ligature variants. They also highlighted that padded guards were preferred over standard metal guards due to the severity of fall risk, particularly from epileptic seizures. The ChallengesSeveral key factors needed to be addressed for this project: 1. No Existing Radiator CoversThe property had bare radiators, increasing the risk of injury if a resident were to fall onto or brush against them during a seizure or accidental trip.2. Severe Fall RiskTwo of the residents experience drop seizures without warning, meaning they fall forwards. A padded solution was required to reduce potential injury on impact. 3. Varied Room RequirementsWhile most of the six guards required sloping tops for safety and hygiene, one radiator was located beneath a window, necessitating a flat-top design to fit the available space without obstructing the sill.4. Calm, Comfortable Aesthetics As part of a longer-term goal to promote a peaceful environment, the client requested a neutral colour that would blend subtly into the surroundings. Solution ImplementedContour conducted a site survey to accurately measure each radiator and assess room layouts. This ensured a seamless installation process and guaranteed that the guards would fit perfectly, including allowances for pipework and windowsills. We supplied six padded radiator guards; all designed for residential use with safety and discretion in mind: Five sloping-top padded guardsOne flat-top padded guard (due to a window reveal above the radiator)Standard safety grilles for ventilationRounded edges and bullnose corners to further minimise injury riskSoft padding and wipe-clean finish for hygiene and ongoing maintenanceA neutral yellowy-cream colour to contribute to a calming domestic environment This custom approach provided a professional, durable and above all safe solution tailored to the residents’ individual needs.ConclusionThis project reflects how Contour’s padded radiator guards can offer more than just compliance; they actively contribute to wellbeing in care environments where safety is critical. By combining thoughtful aesthetics, tailored sizing, and soft but durable protection, the solution delivered peace of mind for both carers and residents.

Project: Early Years Centre, Bromsgrove  Product: DeepClean Radiator Guards  Challenges: Nursery environment, challenging placement of existing electrical trunking, phased building refurbishment  Solutions: Customised flat top radiator guards with bespoke design adjustments to accommodate existing infrastructure  Outcome: Enhanced safety and hygiene, client satisfaction. Background: The Early Years Centre is the latest addition to the Woodland House Group of nurseries. The intention is for the new premises to provide much needed specialist SEN and community use play facilities for Bromsgrove.   In the summer of 2021, Contour successfully provided radiator guards for one of the nursery's sister sites at Chessgrove Park. The customer was so pleased with both the product quality and customer service that they approached Contour again for additional radiator guards for their newly acquired property needing refurbishment.  The Challenges: The new property required a tailored approach due to three key challenges that Contour needed to address for a successful outcome:1. Nursery EnvironmentThe nursery environment required a solution that prioritised child safety and hygiene. Young children frequently interact with fixtures, which can lead to concerns like trapped fingers or lost items. Such incidents not only distress the child but also demand time from nursery staff to provide comfort, administer first aid, or retrieve the missing item. The radiator guards selected therefore needed to be secure, durable, and easy to clean. The guards also required pencil-proof grilles to prevent children from inserting objects, ensuring both safety and cleanliness.2. Placement of Electrical TrunkingThe placement of electrical trunking above some of the radiators left too small a gap for a standard radiator cover to fit and be securely fixed. This required a bespoke design to create a custom solution that could seamlessly integrate with the trunking, while still providing full functionality and accessibility.3. Phased Building RefurbishmentDue to the size of the building, the nursery was opening in stages as refurbishment progressed. This meant Contour needed to coordinate a phased supply of radiator guards to align with the nursery’s opening schedule, ensuring each area had the necessary safety features in place as it became operational.Solution ImplementedGiven the success of the previous installation, the customer chose to maintain the DeepClean specification for the new guards for the following reasons: Pencil-proof grilles which prevent fingers and other objects being inserted and becoming stuck.Drop-down door to allow for easy cleaning, crucial for maintaining a hygienic environment. Radius edges and bullnose corners making it safer if someone fell against the unit.Floor mounted, flat top style for its robust, dual-fix system that secures to both the wall and floor, ensuring stability and durability in a high-activity environment. The tweaked design also fits neatly against the existing trunking, addressing the challenges this created. The site was surveyed to capture precise dimensions, account for the trunking limitations, and customise the cover design. Contour developed bespoke flat top radiator guards with tailored cut-outs to accommodate the trunking, ensuring a seamless fit within the nursery's environment without sacrificing space or compromising the guard's structural integrity. The project was delivered in three stages to align with the nursery's phased redevelopment schedule. This approach allowed Contour to provide radiator guards in sync with each area’s completion, ensuring safety features were in place as soon as spaces became operational. By working flexibly around the nursery’s timeline, Contour supported a smooth transition, minimising disruption and allowing the nursery to open sections gradually while meeting their refurbishment goals. InstallationThe installation of the guards was straightforward, described by the client as "an incredibly easy process", reflecting the ease of setup thanks to the design considerations and instructions provided by Contour.  ConclusionOnce installed, the nursery benefits from enhanced safety and hygiene, ensuring a safer environment for the children. The customer also expressed high satisfaction with Contour’s ability to adapt the product to overcome the challenges of the existing infrastructure and overall project management.  The successful implementation at the Early Years Centre underscores Contour's ability to meet client needs through customised solutions, robust product offerings, and exemplary service.

Contour recently completed an extensive project for a care home in Southern England, entailing the surveying, supplying, manufacturing, and installation of 47 LST radiator covers and 100 meters of pipe boxing. The new installations not only brought the care home up to safer surface heating standards but also ensured accessibility for cleaning and maintenance, crucial for infection control.Prior to the upgrade, the care home faced various challenges, including poor access for cleaning and maintenance, exposed pipework posing a burn risk, and aesthetically displeasing rusty covers. Dust build-up, a known health hazard, was a significant concern due to its potential to cause respiratory issues and spread infections among vulnerable residents.Contour addressed these challenges by installing DeepClean LST radiator guards with patented quick-release hinged doors for easy cleaning. These guards also featured BioCote® protection to combat bacteria and open-ended shoulders to minimise dust traps. Additionally, pipe boxing was fitted to conceal exposed pipework, reducing the risk of scalding. The results were transformative, providing the care home with a safer heating solution while significantly reducing infection risks and dust-related issues. With improved access for cleaning and maintenance, the care home can now better manage infection rates and maintain a hygienic environment for its residents. Moreover, the disposal of previous radiators was carried out responsibly, ensuring a complete and sustainable upgrade process.

The refurbishment of children's wards at Leighton Hospital by the Estates Management Team at Mid Cheshire Hospitals aimed to alleviate the distress often associated with hospital visits for young patients. Recognizing the anxiety induced by unfamiliar surroundings, the team prioritized transforming clinical spaces into welcoming environments conducive to children's wellbeing and recovery.Employing an innovative approach, large format prints of wildlife in forest and jungle settings adorned the walls behind beds, accompanied by soft natural colours on walls, panels, and fixtures. The use of RAL Green 6019 on the DeepClean LST radiator guards contributed to the soothing ambiance, seamlessly blending with the floor covering and complementing the blue panelling behind the wall-mounted washbasins. This thoughtful design choice aimed to create a calming and tranquil atmosphere for children during their recuperation.Furthermore, the choice of RAL White 9003 for the guards in the ward corridors maintained a clean and hygienic environment. The DeepClean guards, featuring a patented drop-down front panel for easy access and a BioCote anti-microbial coating, played a crucial role in upholding hygiene standards in critical care areas. To further enhance the natural theme, Contour supplied a column casing finished in RAL Brown 1019, harmonizing with the jungle and forest-inspired décor. This comprehensive refurbishment initiative demonstrates a commitment to not only aesthetics but also the holistic wellbeing of young patients undergoing treatment at Leighton Hospital.
