48 York Street

Fixfast Ltd

A stone's throw from the Ulster University Campus lies the 11-storey high student accommodation building on the corner of York Street, in Belfast.Having faced significant design challenges with varying heights of buildings already on York Street (such as the 2-storey residential dwelling directly next door), the residential block's design now blends into the street's skyline - solved by staggering the height of the block, only reaching its full height in the middle of the building, to fit in with the cityscape. With 307 studios of varying sizes available for student accommodation, the building also has communal areas including a podium garden, yoga studio, games room, informal study areas, as well as 3 ground floor retail units.ChallengeLeading roofing and cladding company Thornton Roofing took on the building exterior works, including the installation of the stunning façade, opting to use Swisspearl fibre cement panels on the façade face, fixing the entire system (including the façade support), back to a mixture of SFS and concrete framing.SolutionThornton Roofing approached us for a technical calculation on the façade support system used behind the panels, which we provided alongside expert advice on which solution would be best for their specific application.Using our SPIDI Max brackets, rails, and DrillFast A2/304 stainless steel fasteners to suit, Thornton Roofing were able to install the support system securely and efficiently - the SPIDI Max one bracket design leads to faster install on-site, saving time and money at both design and procurement stage.(With thanks to Thornton Roofing for the image)"Working with Fixfast on this project was both cost-effective and straightforward. We dealt mainly with the Newry branch, who were able to quickly provide the helping hand system within the desired timeframe and keep our workflow going, allowing us to complete the project on time." - Gareth Simpson MCIOB MIoR, Contracts Manager at Thornton Roofing

Designing and manufacturing gearbox motors for industrial uses, Parvalux Electric Motors Ltd is a 75-year-old British manufacturing firm based on the south coast of England. To accommodate existing operations and add capacity for the future, Parvalux repurposed an 8.75-acre brownfield site in Poole that combines both an HQ and factory onto the same location.Work began in 2020 on the 160,000 sq ft site - which includes a £3 million investment in new manufacturing capabilities.Putting it at the forefront of efforts to decarbonise construction, the eco-friendly building has achieved a net zero rating.ChallengeStructural steel and industrial cladding specialists Jade-Aden Services were contracted to deliver the complete design and build of the new facility. Selected through previous working relationships with locally based larger companies, Jade-Aden brought in a local supply chain to complete the project, ensuring high quality throughout the entire project build.SolutionThe large roof and wall area gave Jade-Aden the opportunity to install Kingspan composite panels with the use of Fixfast DrillFast A4/316 stainless steel composite fastener range. Fasteners are irreplaceable and meant to match the lifespan of the construction they sit within, so using A4/316 stainless steel fasteners ensure the lifespan of this building is secure, even though the building is situated in a coastal environment. As a demonstration of Fixfast's continuing commitment to quality, the fasteners were supplied as part of the QuadCore Assured warranty from Kingspan - providing reassurance for the lifetime of the building."Jade-Aden wishes to thank all their supply partners for the support given to deliver the Parvalux project."Jade-Aden Services

The newly constructed, £700m Perry Barr residential development is a portion of a regenerative scheme to deliver 1,400 new apartments to North Birmingham, part of the larger Birmingham City Council scheme to revitalise Perry Barr over the coming 20 years. With 9 plots, the Perry Barr development comprises 1 or 2 bed sustainable apartments across varying levels of residential blocks.Plot 7 comprises of 6 blocks, and 150 apartments - all arranged around a communal podium courtyard garden, alongside other amenities such as retail and leisure facilities, and private outdoor spaces.ChallengeThe complexities of 10 different roof levels - including green roofs, balconies, and terraces, lay with the UK's leading national commercial roofing company: BriggsAmasco, who were contracted for the £2m waterproofing element of the build.Choosing to use IKO Group's Permatec and Polimar liquid systems to waterproof the roofs effectively, BriggsAmasco completed what turned out to be a complex 19-month project on time, and without any H&S incidents. SolutionAs Plot 7 was a reinforced concrete frame construction, BriggsAmasco utilised Fixfast's A4/316 grade SureFast 6.1mm diameter fasteners for fastening upstand details around the roof. Being A4 grade, these fasteners have high corrosion resistance, are ETA and CE marked, and have gained UKTA approval and UKCA marking for peace of mind. IKO Group and BriggsAmasco received finalist status under the Bituminous Hot Applied Liquid Waterproofing category at the 2024 UK Roofing Awards - a well-deserved accolade for a construction built for a sustainable, secure future. "On request from the client we were asked to introduce a permanent fixing to the cement faced insulation boards, around the access hatches and AOVs, which would secure them to the concrete upstand. We approached Fixfast to request the most suitable fixing for this type of installation. Their speed of response and technical knowledge was first class and we had the correct specification of fixing sorted the same day, with delivery shortly after. The fixings were installed with no issues and the client signed off on the install to aid in achieving practical completion."Ian Weston, Branch Manager at BriggsAmasco Birmingham
