AHU is the beating heart of this contemporary, architect designed pool house

AHU is the beating heart of this contemporary, architect designed pool house

Recotherm Ltd

Poised at the top of a wind-swept hill, it was essential that this residential pool environment was energy efficient and maximised the stunning views of the Malvern hills. The client gave architect, Klas Hyllén, an open brief allowing a large degree of creative freedom, with the resulting wellness retreat situated apart from the main living spaces.Playing on the strong Arts and Crafts inspired forms of the existing home Klas referenced the several rounded ends to the building forms and continued the strong material language of the existing house in a contemporary way. As such they envisaged a pure, oblong form of brick and water. This primary form is angled towards the stunning landscape views. RequirementKlas Hyllén is passionate about energy conservation, which made Recotherm’s AHU a perfect fit…“A pool is inherently energy hungry, but we have ensured it uses as little energy as possible by avoiding heat losses. Recotherm’s AHU provides heat recovery so that all heat is recycled whilst ensuring sufficient ventilation.” ChallengesUnusually, all pool services needed to be integrated into the pool structure itself in order to achieve the architect’s vision and fulfil the client’s brief. This meant there was no service void around the perimeter, with the water extending to the edges of the building. As such, the large ducts required for air handling needed to be integrated into the structural walls.SolutionRecotherm worked in close collaboration with a structural engineer and used the RHS (rectangular hollow section) steel ring beam for a dual purpose; holding up the timber diagrid roof and functioning as the primary air supply duct to the pool. This vital role in providing unrivalled attention to detail, from initial discussions to quoting, commissioning and installation of the energy saving AHU was why Recotherm were chosen for this prestigious project.OutcomeThis innovative pool hall design has created a large pool area with stunning views and incredible natural light effects. The client was delighted with the levels of service as well as the end result:“They even made a site visit in Christmas week to adjust the system to account for the pool cover and check the unit was performing as it should. The overall environment is so relaxing, quiet and effortless.”

Blue Anchor Leisure's flagship resort has its noise, repair and energy efficiency issues solved by Recotherm Artis 1000

Blue Anchor Leisure's flagship resort has its noise, repair and energy efficiency issues solved by Recotherm Artis 1000

Recotherm Ltd

Blue Anchor Leisure were faced with numerous repair bills, excessive noise and high running costs in relation to their swimming pool air handling unit at their flagship resort, Golden Palm. The unit had been on site for less than 20 years.Residential neighbours were complaining about excessive noise and, as well as wanting to meet the needs of the local community, providing a peaceful environment to their resort clients is a top priority. Therefore Blue Anchor Leisure sought to upgrade their existing pool heating and ventilation system.A competitor’s air handling unit had been specified by a third party, however after conducting thorough research themselves, the client prioritised finding the best product on the market to provide service, reliability and lower running costs and chose Recotherm to provide a solution that met their requirements. ChallengesAccess was only available through standard double doors and the sizable unit was sited high in the building structure on a mezzanine floor. We proposed our Artis 1000 unit; the Artis range of units are known for their efficiency, reliability and providing the best atmosphere for pool hall users. Despite the tight deadline, the unit was delivered to site within the resort's specified timescale and as our units are built from flat packed components we were able to build in the desired location despite restricted access.SolutionInstallation of the Artis 1000 provided Golden Palm Resort with a reliable, cost-effective, and efficient heating and ventilation solution. Neighbours immediately reported on the noise reduction which has improved the overall experience for them, the park visitors and employees. Our track record for engineering air handling units that last 30+ years means the resort can expect reliable performance for years to come, enhancing their operational efficiency, customer satisfaction and instilling confidence in the resort and Blue Anchor Leisure.Recotherm delivered:Engineering expertiseBespoke designEasy installation with flat pack componentsCertified installersEnergy efficiency

Controlled fresh air and heat recovery ventilation for Hereford Council Leisure Pool

Controlled fresh air and heat recovery ventilation for Hereford Council Leisure Pool

Recotherm Ltd

Herefordshire Council needed to replace the existing fresh air ventilation unit at Halo Leisure Pool. The unit was old, with several attempts made to improve the pool hall humidity and the unit’s energy efficiency over the years, however it had never worked well.RequirementRecotherm were tasked with creating a bespoke, energy efficient replacement unit. Our engineers worked on various different configurations to utilise heat recovery whilst still maintaining the existing inlet and outlet positions. Avoiding the existing unit’s method of a run-around coil system meant we were able to design and build a bespoke unit that incorporated recirculation, allowing humidity control.SolutionThe existing 20 year old unit was 8m tall, supported by a welded steel frame; utilising scaffolding and reciprocating saws we were able to remove the unit ready for the new installation.A steel table was constructed to take the weight of our new unit, which had been delivered on-site in flat pack form. The entire project took 4 weeks, resulting in an energy efficient, state of the art, swimming pool air handling unit incorporating controlled fresh air and heat recovery via a plate heat exchanger with EC speed-controlled fans.  The council will realise considerable savings on running costs, and importantly much improved conditions in the pool hall with the humidity now under control. Recotherm delivered:Engineering expertiseBespoke designEasy installation with flat pack unitsCertified installersEnergy efficiencyHumidity control

Friends of Jubilee Pool breathe the difference with new AHU

Friends of Jubilee Pool breathe the difference with new AHU

Recotherm Ltd

Overview Jubilee Pool in Bristol, a local art deco landmark, opened in 1937 and is now Bristol’s first community-run swimming pool and gym. The pool hall environment was suboptimal due to an undersized air handling unit (AHU); this meant that swimmers were experiencing an unpleasant atmosphere and the fabric of this historic building was deteriorating.Challenges At the site survey, the Recotherm team recognised that the specifics of this site required a bespoke unit in order to create the desired atmosphere. In addition, the unit would need to be delivered as flat pack elements due to vehicle size restrictions outside the building. Solution The Recotherm team tailored an Artis 350 unit to deliver the short and long term requirements that Jubilee Pool required. They were also able to deliver the unit in flat packed elements with their in-house specialists building the unit on site.OutcomeThe moment the new Artis 350 unit was switched on, the project funders, Friends of Jubilee Pool, could immediately breathe the difference. Martin Cosnett, Operations Director at Hockley Mechanical & Electrical Services Ltd who carried out the installation of the ductwork and heating system for the new AHU stated:“It was a shame to see such a beautiful historic building suffer from the damage caused by the lack of proper ventilation and heating. The new Recotherm unit was perfect for the job. It will make for a much more comfortable environment for swimmers and staff and prevent further damage to the building while reducing the carbon footprint due to being much more economical to run.”The Friends of Jubilee Pool are delighted:“The pool hall environment was in dire need of a new unit, however we didn’t expect there to be such a dramatic change in environment once the new system was up and running.”

Innovative Swimming Pool Ventilation Solution for Prestigious Residential Property in Belgravia, London

Innovative Swimming Pool Ventilation Solution for Prestigious Residential Property in Belgravia, London

Recotherm Ltd

Recotherm were instructed by Pool Court Ltd, a renowned UK pool construction company, to design a bespoke air handling unit for a unique project at a prestigious residential property located in Belgravia, London.ChallengesThere were various design challenges to overcome on this project:The unit needed to be installed in the basement with limited accessThe swimming pool area featured a rising floor, allowing for flexible use of the spaceThe client desired a ventilation solution capable of handling a substantial cooling load to maintain a comfortable environment during eventsThe property was subject to strict local planning regulations prohibiting the use of exterior condensing units normally needed for cooling SolutionRecotherm developed a one-of-a-kind swimming pool ventilation unit. Integrating the condensing element of the refrigeration process into the unit we overcame the local authority's restriction whilst also providing efficient and effective ventilation that could adapt to changing floor configurations. The basement access was overcome by utilising our flat pack process and building the unit within the plant room. The unit included three fans to ensure the system could operate on full fresh air even when the condenser was running at full speed. This design guaranteed efficient cooling while maintaining optimal air quality during crowded events. Engineered to prioritise the use of fresh air cooling whenever possible, the unit utilises the extra power required by the refrigeration circuit only when necessary. This approach maximises energy efficiency and reduces overall power consumption. This bespoke solution demonstrates a commitment to delivering customised, intelligent solutions that ensure exceptional performance, energy efficiency, and enhanced comfort for Pool Court’s valued client.  Recotherm delivered:Engineering expertiseBespoke designEasy installation with flat pack componentsCertified installersEnergy efficiency
