CIBSE Chimney Systems CPD

CIBSE Chimney Systems CPD

Schiedel Chimney Systems

Schiedel Chimney Systems now offer a comprehensive CPD on Chimney Systems to discuss the various aspects of chimney design and installation process. This can be presented remotely using Google Hangouts, Zoom, or any other conferencing system suitable for the recipients. The interactive discussion and presentations includes:Appliances, fuels and product typesBuilding regulationsCE markingSafety considerations such as Distance to CombustiblesDifferent types of installations and how to overcome problemsInstallation of mineral and steel systemsThe CPD also contained a number of video guides from our YouTube TV Channel which were shown and a USB stick was also provided which included a very handy guide in the form of a flowchart, which easily directed the user to the relevant areas on the stick where they could access drawings and easily download installation brochures relevant to them.A recent CPD was completed for Milton Architects. Mike and Amanda founded Milton Architects in 2005 after working together in London for larger, commercial practices. Their ambition was to create a small, design-focused architectural practice in Marlborough, that would offer their clients contemporary design services supported by well organised, professional expertise.“Schiedel Chimney Systems agreed to write and present a CPD covering the topics we requested. The seminar was extremely helpful and covered the technical knowledge that we needed. The presenters John and David were happy to take time during and after the presentation to answer questions and talk through some of the technical queries that we had on projects. A memory stick with information was also posted to us which has been really useful. We would highly recommend this seminar to Architects.”

Housing developments reducing the need for gas energy by using wood burning stoves and ceramic flues.

Schiedel Chimney Systems

Wood burning stoves are needed to offset the high energy prices. With a house building boom due to the lack of housing, plus the combined shock of energy prices – building houses with secondary heating, such as stoves, has returned to the forefront.Wood-burning stoves are now highly efficient and designed to offset any carbon they release into the atmosphere. Eco-friendly, modern stoves are why Rose Builders decided to add stoves and chimneys to their housing development in Lawford Green. In addition, various houses within the site had the option of adding a wood-burning stove with a built-in chimney.

Noise Reduction within Flue and Chimney Systems

Noise Reduction within Flue and Chimney Systems

Schiedel Chimney Systems

The first thoughts about safety at work are always about physical injury prevention as well as inhaling fumes, hazardous substances, etc. However, Occupational Noise, which is the amount of acoustic energy received by an employee of a company, can cause permanent damage if it is continuous. In the UK, The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, came into effect for all industries from April 2008, which is quite late when you consider that the harm hearing loss can cause. Harm such as Tinnitus, which is the perception of noise in the ear or head, caused by a problem with the inner ear.The sustaining of high noise levels can also mask warning signals, prevent concentration and vital communication. Most authorities around the world have agreed that noise becomes dangerous when it’s higher than 85 decibels during a typical 8-hour work shift. However, noises under 85 decibels can also cause issues with the general public who are in and around the working environment. An example below shows the different examples of noise levels in decibels – the definition of noise is sound that is unpleasant or causes disturbance.ReductionIf a noise can’t be reduced by engineering the equipment, then acoustic quieting is required. This is the process of dampening vibrations from machinery and systems such as flue systems. With the increasing demand for noise attenuation, the demand for noise reduction from flues and chimneys in marine and industrial situations mean that many companies have developed their own silencer programmes. These tend to be combined with flue systems to have a product range which is reducing sound at the design stage

Using volcanic pumice building blocks to build a chimney during a self-build project.

Using volcanic pumice building blocks to build a chimney during a self-build project.

Schiedel Chimney Systems

Avoiding gas reliance when building a new house.Traditional self-build projects have always had heating systems such as gas central heating and solar panels installed. However, with the increasing costs of gas, and the uncertainty of future supplies, a secondary heating source is required. There are options such as ground heating pumps, etc. but a real heating system independent of the grid, plus a stunning focal point has to be a wood burning stove. In fact, wood logs are now the cheapest domestic heating fuel. According to the Stove Industry Alliance, wood now is “costing households 74% less per kWh than electric heating and 21% less than gas heating”. The benefits don’t end there. “Using a modern wood burning stove also costs 29% less to run than an air source heat pump. Wood logs are 87% less carbon intensive than gas, 88% less than electricity and 74% less than an air source heat pump.”Building a traditional steel pipe flue system is always an option, but steel systems are more suitable in retrofit projects where minimum disruption is required. When you are building a house from the ground up, then a more permanent and ultimately lifetime option is the better one.

Why architects and contractors need to tackle the chimney blind spot in data centre construction.

Why architects and contractors need to tackle the chimney blind spot in data centre construction.

Schiedel Chimney Systems

Chimneys are a critical part of building a resilient data centre. They allow the back- up generators to function properly in the event of a mains outage, keeping servers powered and important digital services available to the millions of users seeking to access them.  But flues are not just important to the building owner or operator; they also have a direct impact on the construction of new data halls. There are hundreds of contractors involved in a typical project, and each will require certain phases to complete before they can begin work on site. Leaving flues to the last moment – as some do – significantly raises the chance of errors just as the building is nearing completion. This will not only delay sign off and payment but will also damage the developer’s standing in a market where work is often awarded on recommendation. This oversight is the ‘chimney blind spot’.
