Shackerley SureClad® quarried stone facade at Royal Warwick Square

Shackerley SureClad® quarried stone facade at Royal Warwick Square

Shackerley Facade Systems

Royal Warwick SquareSpecified by: St Edward (Berkeley Group) Project OverviewRecreating the traditional London garden square with a contemporary twist, Royal Warwick Square is an ambitious development of luxury apartments in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. A stone’s throw from Holland Park and some of the capital’s most exclusive shops and restaurants, the development by St Edward, part of the Berkeley Group, exudes the quality and prestige of its brand and location. The project was the final phase of a masterplan for the location and comprises six apartment blocks, four of which were specified with Shackerley’s SureClad® quarried stone façade system, featuring both limestone and granite cladding panels. Design RequirementsA design concept had already been established for the development’s previous two phases, so a cladding system was required that would match those phases while answering St Edward’s requirement for a system that had been tested to meet stringent quality and safety standards. The chosen façade system had to be Euroclass A1 or A2 s1-d0 to BS 13501-1 to meet compliance requirements for residential developments of 18m high or more. As an aspirational brand known for the highest quality standards, St Edward also put in place an additional range of testing and certification criteria to achieve a best in class development.Shackerley was able to provide the comprehensive certification required, enabling use of the Shackerley SureClad® quarried stone façade system to be agreed with the development’s warranty provider. The Shackerley SureClad® quarried stone façade system also enabled design flexibility for the buildings’ structure, while providing a proven cladding system that is in-keeping with both the architectural context of the location and the previous phases of the development.Materials UsedFour of the development’s six apartment blocks have been constructed with a natural stone façade using Shackerley’s SureClad® quarried stone façade system in a honed, creamy-coloured natural limestone cladding panels, with grey feature panels in natural granite cladding. The large-format 1200 x 600mm SureClad® quarried stone panels were just 30mm thick. As a natural, quarried stone product, the façade material is certified as A1 non-combustible and, with no additions to the stone panels, the whole SureClad® installation at Royal Warwick Square delivers an A1 façade.Façade panels totalling 12,500m2 were manufactured at one of Shackerley’s ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire, comprising 27,700 pieces of stone and 6,800 bracketed returns. The panels were manufactured aligned to the installation schedules of the two cladding contractors involved in the project, and were installed using Shackerley’s SureClad® undercut anchored Hang On installation system.

One Vesta Street, ManchesterSpecified by: Chapman Taylor, Manchester Project OverviewPart of the urban regeneration success story of Manchester’s New Islington district on the edge of the city centre, One Vesta Street is a combination of 169 new apartments and three townhouses developed by Manchester Life Development Company (MLDC). Located on the site of a former iron foundry, the development boasts close proximity to New Islington Marina, the heritage of Ancoats and Manchester’s uber-cool Northern Quarter. The eight-storey development aims to combine the essence of Manchester’s industrial heritage and its 21st century reputation for style and individuality, in the specification.Early engagement between with the project team secured a specification change to the SureClad® porcelain stone facade system, which was used on every elevation. Design RequirementsFire safety was a clear priority for MLDC and the company stipulated the use of an A1 rated façade system so the SureClad® porcelain stone cladding system, which is certified as Class A1 to BS EN 13501-1 for fire safety, was an ideal solution.Switching from the original cladding specification to the SureClad® porcelain stone facade system delivered commercial benefits and reduced the structural loading of the façade system, while also providing advantages in terms of faster installation. It was also important that the cladding system would create a great first impression and maintain the building’s high quality, contemporary aesthetic over time. The design for the façade involved 280 different SureClad® porcelain stone facade panel sizes, all plotted on the façade design and required on site in line with the installation sequence. Shackerley’s ISO 9001 accredited Lancashire factories and our ability to give every panel type and consignment a unique and fully traceable barcode were beneficial for this complex design brief. Materials UsedThe SureClad® porcelain stone ventilated rainscreen façade system was installed on every elevation in a creamy-beige 'Lopar' colourway, totalling a façade area of 5123m2. The panels provide a natural, grained effect to give a limestone-like appearance to the building. Each section of the installation involved 12 panel sizes and each configuration of 12 panels was repeated randomly across the façade. Most of the installation was achieved using the SureClad® Hang On system because it was more suitable for the random layout of the different panel types. However, for some areas the patented and award winning SureClad® Access facade system was the preferred option.

Gresham St Paul’s, City of LondonSpecified by: Wilkinson Eyre Project OverviewGresham St Paul’s on Gresham Street in the City of London underwent a £50 million transformation, delivered by Mace. Designed by leading architectural practice, Wilkinson Eyre, the project has maximised the building’s net internal area with an extensive remodelling programme, and added a three-storey extension at roof level.Gresham St Paul’s radical transformation elevates it to the contemporary standards of Cat A office accommodation expected by corporate occupiers. Effectively, the project has created an entirely new building within the existing shell, delivering a contemporary BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated development.Design RequirementsThe building’s existing Portland stone facade was been retained and simplified with aluminium in-fill panels. The design intent was to carry through the materiality of the existing Portland stone to the three-storey extension, however, the possibility of using Portland stone was discounted early in the specification process. The architect needed to find a cladding material that would reference the existing building and answer planning requirements, while working within the loading parameters of the original structure and meeting a series of criteria; look and feel, cost, fire safety, weathering, green credentials and mechanical suitability. The design team also considered a number of reference projects, which included Axtell House, where Shackerley’s SureClad® SureStone® facade system was used for the façades of additional storeys to co-ordinate with the original building’s Portland Stone.Shackerley’s SureClad® SureStone® cladding system offered a viable solution for the buildability challenges of working at height on a confined site in the City. Mace’s strategy was to install the facade as a modular system, with each prefabricated facade section delivered to site as an installation-ready unitised facade module that could be craned into position and secured in place. A successful collaboration between Shackerley, and Austrian facade specialist, GIG Fassaden, resulted in a bespoke prefabricated modular facade installation scheme to aid speed, ease and safety of installation. The united cladding modules were delivered to site on a just-in-time basis and installed aligned to the wider construction programme.Materials UsedShackerley’s SureClad® SureStone® cladding system was used in a creamy beige 'Valpolicella' colourway and a sandblasted finish. The large format panels were 3050 x 1240mm and just 30mm thick, providing the visual impact of large pieces of stone with a lightweight facade solution. Thanks to Shackerley’s technical expertise and ISO 9001 certified manufacturing capabilities, both the SureClad® SureStone® large format cladding panels and the 400 modular facade units required for the project were produced at one of Shackerley’s Lancashire factories. The custom-designed modular facade units utilised Shackerley’s tried and tested undercut anchor and bolt fixing system, with the panels secured directly onto an aluminium frame, designed and supplied by GIG Fassaden.
