Application

A range of extensive green roof systems including; sedum blanket, wildflower blanket, wildflower seeded, sedum plugs, wildflower plugs and bio-diverse/ BNG. Designed and installed to GRO Guidelines.

  • Sedum Blanket is suitable for both new build and refurbishment green roof applications. Can be used on roof pitches up to 45° with retention required over 10°.

  • Wildflower Blanket is suitable for new build applications but generally too heavy for refurbishment. Can be used on roof pitches up to <15° without retention and irrigation; >15° requires retention and irrigation. Suitable for extensive, intensive, and podium green roof systems.

  • Wildflower Seeded is suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects. Roof pitches up to 15° can be greened; not sustainable over 15°.

  • Sedum Plug is suitable for both new build and refurbishment. Roof pitches up to 45° can be greened, but over 12° retention is required.

  • Wildflower Plug is suitable for new build green roofs, podiums and landscaping projects. Roof pitches up to 15° can be greened; over 15° retention and irrigation are required.

  • Bio-Diverse is suited to new build and refurbishment concrete decks and is the best option for biodiversity and BNG requirements. Suitable for extensive and semi-intensive green roof applications.

All Sky Garden Green Roof Systems are designed and installed to GRO and FLL standards to ensure compliance.

We have a range of extensive green roof systems for commercial and domestic applications. The range includes: Sedum Blanket, Wildflower Blanket, Wildflower Seeded, Sedum Plugs, Wildflower Plugs and Bio-Diverse.

Sedum Blanket

Sky Garden's Sedum blanket system offers an extensive solution utilising a pre-grown sedum mat for instant impact. The blanket contains eight to twelve species of sedum. The sedum mats provide an instant green finish.

Wildflower Blanket

Each wildflower blanket is sown with a seed mix of thirty-eight species of wildflower and grass. The species have been specifically chosen to survive roof conditions and increase biodiversity on extensive, intensive and podium systems.

Wildflower Seeded

Sky Garden's wildflower seed systems offer a cost-effective solution whilst still offering high biodiversity of species and aesthetic appeal once the system is fully established. The Sky Garden wildflower seed mix contains between 30 and 40 species of flowers and grasses to provide interest throughout the growing season.

Sedum Plugs

Pre-cultivated propagated plugs, planted directly into the substrate growing medium. These succulent plants are drought, wind and frost tolerant and will steadily colonise the roof area providing an even vegetative cover over time.

Wildflower Plugs

Pre-cultivated propagated plug-plants planted directly into the substrate. The biodiverse plug-plants are seeded and grown with a wide range of native wildflower species suited to the Green Roof environment. Installed and maintained correctly, plants will colonise the roof area.

Bio-Diverse

Locally sourced and site blended bio-diverse system seeded with regional bio-diverse seed mixes. UK provenance species and locally sourced screened products. Bio-diverse seed mix is a blend of grass, herbs, wildflower, cornflower, alpines and perennial plants. The substrate should contour between 80-150mm to provide natural texture to promote biodiversity. To increase BNG, habitats can also be added; log, sand, and stone piles, small ponds too.

3.5 mm Sky Garden non-woven geotextile protection fleece (PF01).

Guidance for specification option:

  • For use on warm roofs, cold roofs, green roofs and podiums.
  • A thick needle-punched non-woven geotextile manufactured from a blend of high tenancy fibres.
  • Optimised for maximum strength, performance and UV stability.
  • 100% virgin polypropylene.
  • Supplied in 50 x 1 m rolls weighing 14 kg.
  • Installed on top of the completed waterproofing (not needed for inverted roofs, as the protection fleece is replaced by a water flow control layer). Installed with 100 mm laps. To be kept clear of drainage and outlets.

21 mm Sky Garden Drainage Reservoir Board With Pre-Bonded Filter Fleece (DDRD20-1).

Guidance for specification option:

  • Rigid drainage board manufactured from HDPE.
  • Combined function as a water-retention, drainage and filtration layer.
  • Rigid sheet with integrated polypropylene filter layer.
  • Studded HDPE sheets contains perforations to drain surplus water and high-capacity dimples (height c.20 mm) for water retention.
  • High compressive strength (115 kPa).
  • Delivery and installation according to Sky Garden instructions.
  • Product arrives in 48.5 m² size rolls.

60 mm Sky Garden Extensive Substrate (SBS01).

Guidance for specification option:

  • A free draining, low nutrient and moisture retentive growing medium made from 100% recycled material in line with the UK Green Roof Code of best practice.
  • Testing conforms within the BS 8616:2019 green roof substrate testing methods and was completed by STRI.
  • Minimum recommended depth: 60 mm.
  • Free draining when saturated.
  • Allows root penetration.
  • Recycled content.
  • Organic material.
  • PAS100 certified.
  • Product arrives in 1 tonne bags or 25 kg sacks.

Planting requirements

20 mm Sky Garden Sedum Blanket (SGSB01).

Guidance for specification option:

Sedum Blanket, grown in the UK, to provide low maintenance solution for extensive green roof systems using a carefully selected mix of sedum species. Sedum is the most commonly used plant species in green roofing due to its ability to grow in harsh weather environments.

Fire breaks

20–40 mm Sky Garden Riverstone (RS01).

Guidance for specification option:

  • In accordance with GRO guidelines, the riverstone borders should be 20/ 40 mm washed rounded gravel and 75 mm deep.
  • Minimum width of 300 mm, against parapets, protrusions and penetrations (non-opening).
  • Minimum width of 500 mm, against vertical walls that have opening windows or doors.
  • Minimum width of 500 mm also for abutments with opening rooflights.
  • Every 40 m, a 1 m wide x 75 mm deep, 20/ 40 mm washed rounded gravel fire break should be installed across the width of the roof.

Edge restraints

Aluminum Separation Profile 80 x 100 mm (AE100).

Guidance for specification option:

  • For use on exposed system edges and as a separation between vegetation and riverstone to maintain the integrity of the green roof system.
  • The aluminium edging is lightweight, robust and can be cut to length, with slots cut into the edging for drainage requirements.
  • The profile should be installed to sit on top of the drainage reservoir board.
  • It can be loosely laid and ballasted in place, but it is recommended to be glued in place. Adhesive is available from the manufacturer.
  • Sky Garden Ltd recommends that any adhesive used be checked with the waterproof membrane manufacturer before use.
