County Hall - LondonSystem Used - TerraSmart Aluminium IGNOA hub for businesses, a site of attractions and accommodation, London's iconic County Hall is as stunning on the outside as it is on the inside, made even more beautiful thanks to our TerraSmart Aluminium. In order to create a venue for events, Coronado Property Developments Ltd needed a solution for the huge steel floor installed into the lightwell.A Grade II listed building required a decking solution that would complement the overall aesthetics and cater for the increased load requirements: the design load went from a 2.0kN Concentrated Load and 2.5kN/m2 uniformly distributed load (UDL) (used for areas of residential activities, typically used for balconies) to a 4.0kN concentrated load and 5.0kN/m2 UDL (as an area where people may congregate).TerraSmart Aluminium was selected as the ideal system to meet the client's loading criteria. Aluminium decking is a lightweight system when compared to other paving solutions, but very strong. Coronado Property Developments Ltd were very impressed with the solution provided by RYNO and the work done by Pritchard & Pritchard, who installed the system in both lightwells in the building. The TerraSmart Aluminium system featured the ADB80 Deck Board, selected specifically for its increased top surface thickness, delivering superior durability, ADS50 Aluminium Joists to suit the spans of the steel frame underneath, and RD-FR Non-Combustible Joist Support Pedestals for guaranteed supporting strength. The steel grillage was supplied by another manufacturer and installed around the decking to meet the ventilation requirements of the air-conditioning units below. The County Hall was opened over 100 years ago by King George V and it's great to see our systems in London's most versatile, historic building.

The Terrace | Lee Valley

Of all our refurbishment projects, this one was one of the smoothest in its deployment, and amongst the most exciting & rewarding in its outcome.Lee Valley is a 10,000-acre (40 km2) Regional Park that offers sporting & outdoor activities, as well as the unique opportunity to get close to nature, learning & exploring its natural surroundings, gardens, and nature reserves. The Lee Valley White-Water Centre, officially opened on 9 December 2010 by Anne, Princess Royal, was constructed to host the slalom events during the London 2012 Olympic Games, and still hosts international events, attracting visitors from across the globe. Since 2012, Lee Valley has hosted the World Championships and two World Cups.In 2023, the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships will attract over 300 of the world's top athletes to the Lee Valley White Water Centre.A local contractor who knew RYNO was impressed by our composite decking, our service & reputation, and introduced us to the project manager of Lee Valley Park Authority. The project was a full refurb of The Terrace which had an ageing & poorly installed wooden decking and a damaged waterproofing membrane that was leaking through to areas underneath. Some of the boards had already been removed to inspect the damage and reveal the extent of the work that needed to be undertaken. Such was the state of the decking that the area had been cordoned off and the café was unable to make use of this space! What was required was a like-for-like replacement aesthetically, which is why we selected & installed our TerraSmart™ Composite system, featuring our Classic Decking Boards, supported by high-load bearing aluminium substructure & RDA-C ‘Clip-on’ Self-levelling Adjustable Decking Pedestal, ideal for terraces subject to high foot traffic. We recommended Valley Provincial as installers who stated: "The TerraSmart decking system was the perfect choice for this project. The system’s ease of installation enabled our site teams to make excellent progress. From pricing through to delivery, Ryno where very supportive and we look forward to installing their decking system on future projects."The entire project was delivered on budget, on time, and, of course, by the deadline for the next event!

The Challenge: Overcoming Roof Terrace Paving Issues at Meridian OneAt Meridian One, a prestigious residential development, the initial inspections of the first block revealed significant problems with the roof terrace paving. The site team identified multiple issues: many pavers were loose and unstable, with oversized gaps forming, even before occupancy. This was not only a safety concern but also a potential aesthetic and functional setback for the project.A detailed site visit by RYNO uncovered the root causes of these problems:Insufficient build-up:The 50mm concrete pavers used on the terraces, combined with a minimal build-up height of only 50mm in some areas, left no room for pedestals, leading to instability.Improper mortar use:Wet mortar had been applied in certain areas to make up for the lack of space and to accommodate drainage gullies. This led to further instability, as the mortar could not adequately support the pavers.Lack of perimeter spacersThe absence of spacers or spring clips around the paving edges allowed for creeping and the formation of gaps over time.Setting out issues:The layout of the pavers, particularly with the small 450x450mm format, resulted in awkward cuts at door thresholds, compounding the existing challenges. The Solution: A Comprehensive ApproachTo address the multifaceted challenges presented by the failing roof terrace paving, RYNO collaborated closely with the site team to develop a comprehensive solution. The core of the strategy involved implementing a robust pedestal system (TerraSmart® Pedestal Paving System IGNO: Fixed Head) combined with careful product selection and expert installation.Optimizing Build-Up Height:One of the primary concerns was the inadequate build-up height, which limited the available space for traditional paving support. To resolve this, a 20mm porcelain paver, Quadro Crema, was selected from RYNO’s extensive range. This choice satisfied both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the project. By reducing the paver thickness by 30mm, sufficient space was created for the installation of the RP-FR Non-Combustible Adjustable Paving Support Pedestal, starting at 25mm.Streamlining Installation:To streamline the installation process and minimize waste, a larger 600x600mm paver format was adopted. This decision significantly reduced the need for complex cutting around the terrace edges, thereby ensuring a cleaner, more efficient installation.Maintaining Stability:To prevent movement and maintain even spacing, the ESC Edge Spring Clip was incorporated into the system. This innovative product created a consistent gap between the paving and the wall, effectively countering outward pressure and ensuring proper drainage.Reinstallation and Quality Assurance:The existing problematic areas were carefully dismantled and reinstalled using the new system. The first block has been successfully completed, and the solution is currently being implemented across the remaining blocks.Key Learnings: The Importance of Early InvolvementBoth RYNO and the site team gained valuable insights from this experience. It became clear that the early involvement of a specialist manufacturer in the design phase is crucial to avoid time, cost, and hassle later in the project. This proactive approach ensures that potential issues are identified and addressed before they become major problems, leading to a smoother construction process and a higher quality end product.A Word from Vistry“I have to say that the products that they’ve recommended have been absolutely superb. We have used them across the whole project, and it’s been absolutely fabulous. Easy to manage my job. The tradesmen find it easy to use as well. The follow up visits from RYNO have been great. They’ve been very supportive, checking how we use the product, including advice, where we need it. So, keep up the good work!”Maria Butzki-Vogel, Site Manager – Vistry Partnerships

Finally, non-combustible decking that actually looks like wood! Our first Vitrified Composite case study.  The Challenge: Combining Aesthetics, Fire Safety, and Durability in High-End Milton Keynes Development Bowback House, an ambitious residential development in Milton Keynes, demanded more than just luxury – it required advanced fire safety and durability standards, especially for the terraces and outdoor areas. HG Living, the developer behind this high-end project, sought a terrace flooring system that not only looked exceptional but was also fully compliant with strict fire safety regulations. With limited time and challenging site constraints, they needed a solution that balanced visual appeal, safety, and speed of installation.Given the project's prestige, the system also had to complement the stunning roofscape while adhering to height restrictions and working around a complex drainage crate substructure. The tight project deadlines added further pressure to deliver quickly, without compromising on quality or safety. The Solution: RYNO’s Vitrified Composite Decking and Pedestal System – Fast, Safe, and Stylish HG Living reached out to RYNO after being impressed by the realistic wood-effect finish of RYNO’s Vitrified Composite decking. After a same-day sample drop to HAALO, the project architect, they were convinced that this system would meet both the aesthetic and regulatory demands of the project. The vitrified composite decking system is not only visually stunning but also non-combustible, achieving an A1 fire rating. Furthermore, its design ensures it is inherently wind-uplift-proof, providing additional security on exposed terrace areas.Quick Installation and Stock Availability Speed was critical as the project was nearing completion. RYNO’s stock availability proved vital in meeting deadlines. Since all components of the system were available from stock, including the decking boards, no time was wasted on manufacturing delays. This allowed the team to deliver and install quickly, ensuring the project remained on track.Solving Height and Substructure Challenges The terrace presented another significant challenge: low height build-ups and a drainage crate substructure. RYNO’s team worked closely with the site team to survey and design a bespoke support system that would provide the necessary strength and stability while adhering to the minimal height build-up required. This bespoke design ensured a rigid and stable installation, preventing any issues during use.Collaborative Problem-Solving: RYNO and Kilhan Construction Partnership In addition to the decking system, RYNO worked in tandem with Kilhan Construction, the subcontractor responsible for the terrace paving. Kilhan required a durable and fast-to-install paving support system. RYNO provided their terrace pedestal system to support the concrete paving on the terrace level. The metal pedestals used were not only fully non-combustible but also designed for long-term durability, offering a 30-year warranty and a 60-year design life.Real Results: A Stunning, Safe, and Durable Outdoor Space for Milton Keynes Thanks to RYNO’s quick turnaround, fire-rated materials, and custom design solutions, the Bowback House terraces and outdoor spaces were completed to the highest standards. The combination of RYNO’s vitrified composite decking and non-combustible pedestal systems created a beautiful, functional, and safe environment for the residents. The project stands as a testament to the importance of collaboration and flexibility, delivering results that balance luxury, safety, and durability for years to come.

The Challenge: Reimagining a Heritage Site with Modern Balcony SolutionsThe redevelopment of Hammersmith Town Hall on West King Street posed unique challenges. This Grade II-listed site was transformed into a mixed-use urban quarter, blending heritage preservation with modern functionality. Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the project created a vibrant new civic campus featuring shops, restaurants, affordable housing, and enhanced public spaces. Key to this transformation was the construction of residential balconies that needed to meet aesthetic, safety, and structural requirements. However, the layout of the balconies initially posed significant design challenges for the main contractor, Ardmore, and their installer, ABM Tiling. Traditional pedestal systems proved unsuitable for the complex design, but working with the design teams, Ryno assisted in specifying the optimal balcony solution – BalcaSmart Rail System. Additionally, with wind uplift challenges on the balconies, the porcelain tiles needed to be restrained to ensure the long-term safety of those that occupy the redevelopment. The Solution: RYNO’s BalcaSmart® Rail Paving System with Visual Wind Uplift FixingRYNO stepped in to resolve these challenges, proposing the innovative BalcaSmart® Rail Paving System with Visual Wind Uplift Fixing. This solution offered the flexibility and support needed for the porcelain tiles while addressing the unique requirements of the balconies. After an on-site visit and thorough consultation, RYNO’s team collaborated closely with Ardmore and ABM Tiling to ensure the system’s success. Key Features of the BalcaSmart® Rail Paving System:Structural Integrity: The smart and versatile way to achieve paved balconies. Paving rail sits perpendicular to balcony joist, providing totally stable support for paving tiles.Visual Wind Uplift Fixing: The system is supplied with discreet flange-headed screws and washers to secure the tiles to the rail system. Tightening the screws clamps the paving to the rails and provides a successful countermeasure against the effects of wind uplift.Flexibility and Precision: Allows many different layout formats including random length, mixed width, stack bond, stretcher bond, and plank paving. Paving spacers also allow rapid water drainage through paving.Collaborative Problem-Solving: A Team EffortRYNO’s hands-on approach proved critical to the project’s success. By working closely with ABM Tiling and Ardmore, RYNO provided ongoing support and expertise throughout the installation process. This collaboration ensured:Optimised Material Use: RYNO’s solution made effective use of the surplus porcelain tiles, avoiding additional costs and reducing waste.Tailored Adjustments: The system was customized to address the unique layout and structural challenges of the balconies.Efficient Installation: On-site guidance and best practices from RYNO facilitated a smooth and timely installation process.Real Results: A Seamless Blend of Heritage and Modern LivingThe refurbished Hammersmith Town Hall now stands as a testament to thoughtful design and expert execution. The balconies, featuring the BalcaSmart® Rail Paving System, perfectly complement the site’s blend of historical and contemporary elements.  “We installed RYNO's specialised pedestal and rail systems not only for levelling and drainage but also for their proven effectiveness in counteracting these uplift forces.” – ABM TilingWith RYNO’s innovative solutions and collaborative spirit, Hammersmith Town Hall’s redevelopment has delivered a vibrant, inclusive space for the community while preserving its architectural legacy.

The Ikea Hammersmith roof terrace project was an exciting one to be involved with as it is a perfect example of when to use a rail-based support system over pedestals.Ikea is a global brand known for its simple design solutions that can be used by everyone. The system – TerraSmart Rail IGNOThere was 6600m2 of the TerraSmart Rail system installed across the terrace to support concrete pavers and porcelain pavers. The lattice make-up of the paving system meant that the insulation layer placed upon the original roof was held down. This framework offered a robust and reliable substructure to the walking surface that will experience a lot of foot traffic. As it is part of our IGNO range, the system is fully non-combustible.The ChallengesThe roof had existing features in the structural slab, which meant that pedestals alone wouldn’t have been able to successfully support the surface, and therefore, a rail system was employed. The rail system allowed easy adjustment to the height creating level plains across the terrace. This system also became an advantage when forming the ramp featured in the design because the TerraSmart Rail can provide non-combustible multidirectional support to the pavers maximising stability and reliability, creating a robust and safe incline a the desired angle. Two different pavers were used as part of the project, a 50mm concrete tile and a 20mm porcelain tile. The transition between the two pavers took place at the same level. The seamless transition between the two finishes was achieved by ‘zoning’ the areas and changing the paving support heights. As it was part of a larger building, the terrace had to account for the expansion and contraction felt over time by differences in the residual temperature. The paving supports had to account for this so that any heat-induced changes would have minimal impact on the safety of the surface. An expansion profile was manufactured to slot between the tiles found over the expansion seam in the insulation to overcome this issue. The expansion profile rises above the gap between pavers and creates an L-shaped cover, hiding any expected movement. Why the project succeededThe success of this project was down to the collaborative effort between everyone involved in the project. The unique features of the project were worked on by the project, innovation and specification teams at Ryno and were complemented by the installation carried out by Greenside Landscapes.

Postmark is a new residential development on the site of the former Royal Mail Mount Pleasant Mail Centre. In addition to being involved with the paved roof terraces within the new Pheonix Place development, Ryno worked directly with Broadway Malyan Architects to come up with a decking solution for the private balconies.System UsedTerraSmart® Aluminium was used across each of the balconies, with RD-FR adjustable decking pedestals and joist supporting over 2000m2 of sleek aluminium deck boards. Concrete slabs were laid between the substructure and deck boards to help counter wind uplift by increasing the overall dead load of the system.Testimonial “Approaching Ryno was a really easy thing to do…I felt confident using them.”– Gareth Rowe, Principal Landscape Architect, Broadway Malyan Want to hear more? Tower 12 Spinningfields

RYNO

Tower 12 takes its name from both the number of floors it spans and the fact it was the twelfth building in Spinningfields, Manchester.Due to the area being dominated by commercial developments, often inhabited by financial industry tenants, the Spinningfields area has been dubbed the “Canary Wharf of the North”. Located in the heart of this bustling district, Tower 12’s design offers a unique, holistic, and modern work environment. This vibrant area, furnishing both residents and office workers with entertainment, bars, and restaurants, also features and celebrates the local heritage with the Peoples History Museum located just across the river. This is mirrored with Tower 12 whose façade emanates the industrial heritage of the area but whose function retains modern refinement.Flexible Business Interiors created the terrace spaces on Tower 12 using the pedestal paving system, which is comprised of our specifically designed paving pedestals and porcelain tiles. The overall project design is enhanced by the seamless transitioning from indoor to outdoor spaces: achieved using Ryno’s simply adjusted RP-FR non-combustible paving pedestals. The porcelain tiles, in the shade Argento from the Quadro range, punctuated the space with their elegant, contemporary finish. This paving choice created a stain-resistant, slip-proof, and non-combustible surface ready to face the test of time.

With over 22,000 students on campus, the University is investing in its teaching, research and residential area. They employed the TerraSmart Rail system in their paved areas to help support this development.Systems Used - TerraSmart RailTerraSmart Rail was installed due to its light system weight and its lattice structure. Having a lattice structure provides multi-directional support across each paver which is ideal for high-footfall areas. ChallengesThe ground top surface that the system sits on has multiple level changes across the area. On top of this, the final finish also had to integrate with a traditional solid build-up. This meant ensuring that the rails were perfectly level across the finish.Location: University of LiverpoolCompleted: 2022Architect: BCALandscapes
