Application

Suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects. Roof pitches up to fifteen degrees can be greened; not sustainable over fifteen degrees. Used for roof greening to enhance biodiversity and ecological function.

Description

Sky Garden's wildflower seed systems offer a cost-effective solution whilst still offering high biodiversity of species and aesthetic appeal once the system is fully established.

Features and benefits:

  • Wildflower seed is to be sown at three grams per square metre over substrate with a minimum depth of 100 mm.
  • It is essential that the seeds are watered immediately after installation to facilitate germination and growth.
  • The seed mix contains between thirty to forty species of flowers and grasses to provide interest throughout the growing season.
  • System components include protection layer (3.5 mm geo synthetic filter fleece), drainage layer (20 mm drainage and retention cell), filtration layer (2 mm geo synthetic filtration fleece), substrate layer (blended growing medium +80 mm), and vegetation layer (wildflower seed 3 g/m²).
  • System laid flat with light 20 mm contour can be specified at design.
  • System water reservoir capacity is 8–10 litres per square metre.
  • System weight dry is 98 kilograms per square metre and wet is 126 kilograms per square metre.
  • Substrate runoff reduction is 70%.
  • Vegetation coverage is zero percent at install.
  • Flowering season is spring and autumn.
  • Typical maintenance visits per year are two.
  • BREEAM credits are available.
  • Additional items include river stone detail (500 mm 20:40 stone detail), metal retention and separation detail (1.5 mm bonded or ballasted system), irrigation recommended for establishment and periods of drought, and additional species such as regional wildflower and cornflower over seed 1–2 grams per square metre.
  • Immature systems require irrigation during establishment and periods of hot dry conditions.
  • Suitable for new build and refurbishment with roof pitches up to fifteen degrees; not sustainable over fifteen degrees.
  • Immature systems take up to 36 months to establish with correct roof management and maintenance.
  • System weight allows for inverted system ballasting as dry weights exceed 80 kilograms per square metre.
  • Benefits include greater species diversity, greater ecological function, and better habitat and pollen/nectar provision.
  • Habitat creation includes rock and log piles.
  • Represents a significant biodiversity net gain for plant and animal species, supporting pollinators, local wildlife, and urban biodiversity.
