Description

For listed or historic buildings, the Heritage patent glazing system merits serious consideration.

The design of the Heritage patent glazing bar originates from the late Victorian period and remains substantially unaltered to this day and the Heritage system, the original Standard Patent Glazing system is the only patent glazing system still available on the market that features the original lead cover surrounding its hermetically sealed patent glazing bars.

If your objectives include historic building conservation, or your project involves a listed, prestigious or architecturally important building and you want to help protect its special architectural and historic interest during its replacement, refurbishment or upgrading, then the Heritage system is unmatched.  And because it’s unique, it’s also very suitable for new build projects where aesthetic design values are uppermost in the architect’s mind, being part of an architectural toolkit which can play a very important role in helping to create a unique statement building firmly rooted in the traditional architectural vernacular.

The Heritage patent glazing bar consists of a galvanised rolled mild steel core which is inserted into a seamless lead extrusion covering that incorporates a twin wing weathering system and glass seatings. The ends of the lead covers are then soldered to give a hermetic seal. Cast brass fixing plates and glass stop are screwed on to produce the finished glazing bar.

Whilst the system remains substantially unaltered compared to its original incarnation, certain components and our manufacturing techniques and equipment have been improved over time to ensure that the system continues to meet quality expectations and continues to be compliant with relevant legislation and standards.

Heritage Patent Glazing bars meet all of the requirements of British Standard BS5516: 2004 Code of Practice for the design and installation of vertical and sloping patent glazing.

The average Heritage Patent Glazing bar typically weighs more than twice as much as an aluminium SkyLine Box Patent Glazing bar, but typically, Heritage Patent Glazing bars costs are similar to the polyester powder coated SPG7 glazing bar section from our SkyLine Box Patent Glazing system.

Features and benefits:

  • Designed to produce a traditional Victorian style.
  • The glazing bar consists of a galvanized, rolled carbon steel core which is inserted into a seamless lead extrusion covering, incorporating a twin wing weathering system and glass seatings.
  • The ends of the lead covers are soldered to give a hermetic seal.
  • Original design cast brass fixing plates and glass stop are screwed on to produce the finished glazing bar.
  • Can accommodate single and double glazing, and passes Advisory Committee for Roofwork (ACR[M]) and Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT) non-fragility tests in both single and double glazed formats.
  • No capping is required.
  • Can be combined with opening vents to offer a complete glazing solution.
  • Manufactured in accordance with BS 5516: 2004 Code of Practice for the design and installation of vertical and sloping patent glazing.

Manufacturer guidance

  • Consult manufacturer before specifying a particular glazing bar.
  • Please note that the lower span values are calculated using the most extreme environmental loadings, whereas the higher span values are based on the least extreme.
  • The manufacturer requests a site postal code to enable them to calculate the correct glazing bar type for every project.
  • The glazing bar spans above are based on using 6 mm thick glass for the double glazed, single glazed and canopy types.
  • Spans are dependent upon the site location and exposure rating, site altitude, distance from the sea, height of glazing from ground level, shape of the roof, pitch of glazing, glazing bar centres, glass weight, wind speeds, snow load, dead load and maintenance loads.

Glazing bar spacing:

  • Approximately 600 mm centres.
