OVERVIEW
The Leonardo project, located opposite Millennium Square in Leeds, is a distinctive Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) development that skillfully blends historical and modern design. This complex consists of a Grade II Listed Victorian schoolhouse and a newly constructed building, linked by a central courtyard. Design firm 74 was tasked with unifying both structures while maintaining their unique identities.
Working closely with the client, Generation Partners & Ares, 74 developed a design language that honors the schoolhouse’s historical significance while embracing the sleek, modern aesthetic of the new build. The contemporary design of the new building features bold, rich colours and a dynamic material palette, reflecting the energy and vibrancy of student life. In contrast, the Victorian schoolhouse retains its classic elegance, offering a timeless and refined atmosphere that complements its heritage.
For the new build, 74 utilized Acoufelt acoustic panels in the rich ‘Currant’ colourway, which is used as the primary tone throughout the interior. Central to this scheme are the bespoke lighting installations featuring Acoufelt Filasorb™ ‘Currant’ acoustic panels. These panels, set in an oblong shape encased in a golden frame, provide a visual contrast against the wooden tones of the desks and dividers. Strategically placed over co-working and entertainment spaces, they assist in reducing noise, creating a pleasant soundscape for students to study and connect.
In the main atrium, which features a glass ceiling, 74 chose Fracture Panels in the ‘Trellis’ pattern and matching ‘Currant’ colourway to frame the top and bottom of the windows. These panels create cohesive lines of the main colourway throughout the space, seamlessly tying together the various design elements. The interplay of light through the glass ceiling enhances the bold, rich tones and bevelled cut patterns creating a dynamic visual contrast that elevates the overall aesthetic.
Each product is crafted from Acoufelt’s signature FilaSorb™ acoustic felt, offering a robust suite of sustainability credentials. Made from 60% recycled PET and produced using 40% renewable energy, the materials are also Declare Red List-free, third-party verified, and manufactured in Britain. At the end of their lifecycle, the products are fully recyclable, closing the loop on sustainability and reinforcing their eco-friendly impact.
Overall, the Leonardo project showcases how thoughtful design can blend historic and contemporary elements. Through the use of Acoufelt’s acoustic solutions and 74’s expert design, the development offers a visually striking, functional, and environmentally responsible space that enhances the student experience.
